A buddy of mine, a blacksmith/knifemaker in Australia who makes ninja weapons for me from time to time, sent me an email today:

Out of Business

The Australian "government" has made it illegal to send weapons of any kind, including toys, through the mail. That means he is out of business, as are all knifemakers, swordmakers and other artisans in Australia. I encouraged him to move immediately to America. Australia sucks monkeybutt!

I completely agree, Danny. The knee jerk reaction seems to stem from some high profile teenage gangs who carried katanas and other swords and sliced up each other and a few citizens.

Australia is a police state. Much of it was established as a penal colony. The Draconian laws have not changed much.

I have a good friend there who sell some of the top keris and Indonesian edged weapons you will ever see. He is distressed about this. He can get license to continue selling, but it means jumping through a lot of idiotic governmental hoops; inspections of his home where he keeps his pieces and just general looking over his shoulder.

He also does .22 cal high end target/match competitions. You would not belive what the Gov't does to people with guns.

I just can't believe this. Just snatched his livleyhood from under him. Modern societies don't give a damn about skilled artisans. Unreal. :thumbdn:

So much for Crocodile Dundee. :( I feel bad for the citizens of that country, and also disgusted that they allowed it to happen.

That is so stupid and ill-thought!

Think about it. Most custom knives are way more expensive than what some punk kid is going to pay for to slash and mug people with. Why spend 100's or 1000's of dollars on something that you could get for 30 bucks at a flea market? How many of these gangmember's swords were custom made? How many were probably pot metal United Cutlery crap blades? What are they going to do next? outlaw baseball and cricket bats? How about nails and bolts? Put those two together and you have got a weapon that will kill just as easily as sword...and probably won't break on the first swing.
This is so idiotic. Yet another example of government policy that punishes law abiding citizens for bringing and art to society's table. Ninja weapons=bad. Bowie Knives=bad. How about buck folders? What about SAKs? What about nail clippers?
Man, I thought our Aussie brothers were $h|t kickers? I know they are good people, and I respect them. However, I just can't see how this law does anything to protect people. As long as there is wood and lead pipes and screwdrivers, people are going to get beaten and stabbed.

While we pain at Australia's fate, let's not forget the Clinton inspired BATF forced 50% of licensed FF dealers out of business during his terms of office through fee and red tape.

It can and does happen here.

I wonder if this is what's happening at Valiant. I've had an order for 25 blades in for three weeks without a response. My stock has dwindled to 6 blades that are not best sellers. Little to no action.:(

Sheeple down under, say "baa-baa" to your rights.

Like this will lower crime. Outlaw all firearms too, while you're at it.

If I lived in the states I'd be nervous too they are already bandying the H word about. Every time I hear the word Homeland it makes me nervous (especialy with the capital H) I can hear the symbolic jack boots marching in the distance. Many people see only threats from the left, high taxes wellfare state etc. but fail to see that that is not the direction things are going. If lived in the US (and even here in Canada) I'd be alot more worried about facism than socailism.

Ditto and thanks.

There is no difference between fascism and socialism. They are both statism, the belief that government control is better than individual initiative. They are both rooted in the mass, urban, industrial societies that overpopulation spawns. They are supported by cheap commodities and psychological isolation (guilt, insecurity).

We have problems in the US, but many of our jurisdictions are actually going the other way, with "shall issue" laws now found in the majority of the states.

Agreed Esav. Nice to see you drop by the Cantina again:) Another thing to remember about the name of the DOHS is that it was pretty much created in response to an attack unlike any we have seen on American soil in a long time. Its creation date is Oct. 8, 2001, long before we knew what kind of Pres Bush would be. I think "Homeland Security" is supposed to sound patriotic. It's supposed to rally the masses to the cause. Policy good, bad, or indifferent is a moot point. It doesn't change the fact that "Homeland Security" was named in response to an attack to surge American pride and protection. The only way to attach this to jackboot politics would be to believe that Bush planned and carried out 9/11 with the Saudis, etc etc etc. I don't think anyone here has that kind of crackpot thinking. I think it is fair to disagree all you want with the way DOHS has been handled and what falls under it, but the name is 5 years old.

Presidents come and go. That's the great thing about the democratic system. All of the stuff that Bush has set in motion can be changed if the other side of the aisle could get someone into office and change the policy to what the American public wants. RIght now, it appears that Americans, as a whole, want a more right leaning society. In a few years, all of this can be changed if America as a whole decides that a more leftist view would fit the country a little better. Myself, I would like to see a central Prez. elected.

However, with all the political mudslinging and nose thumbing I'm sick to damn death of politics. The republicans want to feed me stuff and tell me it's good for me like abortions and gay marriage are bad. Might be, but I don't care. Just keep the planes from crashin' on my head..K? The Dems want to throw paper airplanes and shoot spitwads for 8 years instead of trying to find a common ground with the current admin. In the next election I'm voting for Pedro and going home to practice my "numchuk" skills:D

Would this have happened in Austrailia if the majority of it's citizens didn't want it?

I don't know much about the country. Their citizens must vote and express their wishes.

Does anybody know if this unbelieveably strict knife policy came as a result of the majority wanting it and lawmakers passing it?

Glad I live in Florida.
