Fast opening folder?

Is there any manual folder that can be opened faster or at about the same rate as an auto?

Probably most of 'em these days: thumbstuds, Sypderco holes, and there are some you can flip open one-handed, like the Buck Strider. Linerlocks are pretty slick, but my CS Voyagers open with hardly any effort, too. You don't have to fumble for a button so they may be even faster.

Camillus CUDA with the thumbstud is pretty fast once you get it out of your pocket.

For my money; and I have played with some sweet MT's over the years, my manual SOCOM and manual AFCK are SWEET! After about 5 years of beating them up, they are now, officially, PERFECT!

Here's one I just got.

It's the Cruiser by Jim Hammond. The fipper allows for VERY fast opening :)

Here it is in the closed position. You can see the flipper sticking up out of the handle. With just a little practice, it will open VERY fast!!

A waved Emerson folder, hands down, is the fastest.
It is open before you could press a button, or apply pressure onto a thumb stud/disk/hole or a flipper.
The Wave catches ont he lip of the pocket as you draw the knife, and safely, and very effectively, opens the blade, so when it comes out, it comes out open... and, it might just be nano-seconds, but thats still a knife thats open before you can complete the draw and press the button/flick a flipper/press the stud/disk/hole.

There is also the "assisted opening" catagory, ala the Ken Onion Speed-Safe mech used by Kershaw.

Agreed. Waved Emerson is faster than any auto - it's allready open when it comes out of the pocket.

But - my .02's - truth to be told it has to be yanked out of the pocket quite aggressively.
Someone once said something like "like you would take a snake out of your pocket". Agree that opinion too.

do you guys even have to ask? it's obviously a Waved emerson that will open the fastest, and i think a skilled user with a Bali will be able to match that speed too. the kershaw speed asists are fast once you get it out of your pocket and into your hand, but i think the way they position their clips is very counterproductive. and we are talking about open as in pulling it out from a pocket or sheath and then opening it and not opening it while its in your hand already right?

First, lets face it, much as i like autos, a good thumb stud opener is at LEAST as fast as a good auto, so, autos then offer only one advantage, one handed opening, but even then, it can be done with a thumb opener, so really what it boils down to is...Autos are FUN and nice gadgets to play with, but they offer little, if anything uselful over a good non auto folder. Having said that, my M/A MOD Ladyhawk opens FAR faster than any auto can, its so fast, its almsot telegraphic. :) You push the stud and its open. Neat knife, wouldnt mind the auto version...:D

My Spyderco Military can be opened lightning quick because of the oversized Trademarked Hole.;) Just a pinch and flick of the wrist and the blade snaps open ready to go. I believe that another reason that it's so quick is the tip-down carry configuration.....I don't need to reach into the pocket to grab the knife. :D

The large CRK&T Crawford/Kasper or the MT SOCOM Elite models. Both needs only a fast movement up with the wrist, then an abrupt stop and the blade snaps open like an automatic knife.

@Dr.Lathe: The "Cruiser" folder looks great!

The Cold Steel TiLite has something like the Emerson Wave built into the gaurds on the blade. Pull it out of your pocket and it's open.

I also think the Mad Maxx will do the same, but I haven't seen one in person yet.

You guys are going to think I'm nutz, but once I drag the dang thing outta my pocket, I can open my monsterous Cold Steel Vaquero Grande pretty darn quickly, with either the thumb-stud, or a flick of my wrist..

...But, about the "flick of my wrist" thing; It can be totally horrifying to watch that huge folder go flying out of my hand if I loose my grip on it while "flicking"....

Most of the CRKT M-16 series have the stud that makes it as fast as a auto (think the stud is called the "Carson flipper"). You can get these in various sizes, and they are not expensive. They are not high end custom, my police "SRT" model has held up well under use.
