Fasting??

My longest fast is 10 days, nothing except water, to drop weight before marathon races.

I would be doing this while in the middle of marathon training, running 5-10 miles a day.

It definitely changes your perspective on food, I can go deeper if anyone is interested.

i'm doing a partial fast for sorts, two very small meals, two very small snacks . basically protein induction, so i can reset my clock as it were, prior to going back to a Paleo diet... i've dropped a bunch of weight, which is good, and will continue as long as i feel comfortable. it's great knowing i can just drop into this as needed. about 10 years ago, i lost nearly 90 lbs this way. sweet.

interestingly, food tastes AMAZING. one actually wants to slow down and chew chew chew every morsel and really get into it.

mental effects are nice. i'm more alert, and honestly keep forgetting why i'd eat junk food which brings you down. i'll probably never regularly eat or drink the crap stuff again, now that i've had a full circle experiment. i mean why? the stuff is provable bad for us. gah. the real stuff tastes SO GOOD once you reset your body's idea of taste and flavor to normal levels.

plus i feel like i have the energy to run 5 miles every day, and chop wood for the rest of it. insane. that would just burn calories faster ;)

if you believe any of the hype in "diet for your type"; they posit that certain blood types have an easier time with this kind of thing. O being the more paleo type. they arrange the other types towards being more agrarian, and other what nots. wiki probably has the full dope sheet.

Yup, my experience was similar to yours, makes it kind of scary, it's such a different and interesting way of spending your day, and being in control of such major part of living, makes me think about doing it again. I don't know what that could mean so I try to take it in moderation. Once a year, maybe.

Great thread! Rice, smoked oysters, a small chunk of cheese, a couple granola bars, and a scoop of peanut butter, with plenty of water and coffe was it today. Along with a walk of several miles. I'm on the way! Felt great. Thanks to the OP.

i had a very severe case of diverticulitis (had surgery to remove a foot of colon) and during and before the surgery i didnt eat. i rarely ate at all. lost well over 35-40lbs. what i did find out then was how good i did with little to no food. my body type is short and very stocky. it seems as if my body absorbs everything it can from food. unlike my very skinny cousin who has to eat a lot during the day. i was shocked at how good i fealt too eating only a little. granted i didnt exersize during this time period and my calorie burning was very low. however i think if i adjusted with a more active lifestyle i can find the "sweet spot" as far as food intake.

fasting as a skill , as its been said more or less a few times allredy isnt a maybe , its most likely a will happen thing ..
I spent some time homeless , what I owned varied from the pants I wore , to having a vehicle and a swag and at one time even a pigin dog
Going without food was no big deal .
Some things I found tho , the change over period in diet from city living to living from what I got myself .. that was always harsh on the body , more so if there were a few days between the two with little or no food . First time or two this happened it knocked me around seriously . I learned to take it easy as possible , and how to manage having the poops .. dehydration can be an issue charcoal pills to bind ya up some are a godsend ..

Just got to thinking about it when someone mentioned taking a day or so without food and living off what they procured .. having a case of trots combined with short supply of food , and maybe food your body isnt used to at that ... can be a little more severe than just a regular fast . Bring charcoal pills , and laxatives .. you never know what youll need :P

Like others have posted, I do small fasts on a regular basis, partially as a cleanse, and partially to see where I am when I go without food for a length of time.
One important thing of note in the last year: when I inadvertently lost weight due to other circumstances, I was able to evaluate how my stamina without food was at different weights. As expected, I did reach a point where I may have looked nice, but did not have near as much energy after 8 hours without food while active. At 10 hours, I felt it bad. Based on this, I believe that having some physical reserves is a must. And I can generally get away with storing an extra 5lbs on the ole hips anyway with my height.
