That FFFBM is seriously sexy, did you use a belt sander or a dremel type rotary tool to achieve that?

I have a large metal lathe that I put a scotch brite wheel onto do the satin finish (like the picture below, but I usually use a 6" wide wheel, not the 1" wide one shown). I usually do the spine on a 1" X 36" belt sander and follow it up with hand sanding to produce the final finish.

Looks like your camera's CCD has a dead pixel. :( See the white spot on your thumb knuckle in the wire wheel photo, and in the same place in above pics.

I see that, what would need to be replaced to fix it?

The camera. It looks like you have a Nikon Coolpix 885, which is currently a *very* affordable digital camera. Generally, as far as I know, you can't just replace the imaging sensor at a cost less than the cost of a new camera. If your camera is still under warranty, send it in and maybe they'll fix it for ya.

Cameras aside, those SOWs are friggin awesome, and very nice work on the FFBM!

How could you tell what type of camera I had, just curious? I like the camera, but if I were to replace it, I would get something more updated.

The kind of images you posted (jpeg) have data inside the image which describes attributes of the image. The data is called Exif data. So I can download your image and view the Exif data. What I see from your Nick/wire-wheel photo is:

File name : /tmp/dscn2333lm1.jpg
File size : 275756 bytes
File date : 2007:05:18 09:55:56
Camera make : NIKON
Camera model : E885
Date/Time : 0000:00:00 00:00:00
Resolution : 1024 x 768
Flash used : No
Focal length : 8.0mm
Exposure time: 0.132 s (1/8)
Aperture : f/2.8
ISO equiv. : 100
Metering Mode: matrix
Exposure : program (auto)

If you did not want that information to be available, you would have to edit the image and save it without the Exif information.

There are lots of programs available to see Exif info. My workstation in my office runs Linux and I use an application called "jhead" to print Exif data. In Microsoft Windows I think you can right-click on an image icon and select "properties" and somewhere in there you can see the info as well.

Sorry, fellers. Nothing you can do with a dead pixel. It's a pretty small flaw, though -- still, can't hurt to ask Nikon if they'll pop in a new CCD.

Nice Job Grinducci! I just received my Fat Desert/Sage BM and will probably do something similar very soon.

Hey randucci, is this pic of the knife right after it got out of the paint stripper?

the metal surface looks like it was already pretty smooth right under the coating. I might strip mine too!

Yes, that picture shows the blade untouched after it was stripped. The flat grind was very smooth and even, the unground part was fairly smooth, but you would really need to remove the handles to get a true even surface. It looks fine for a user to just scotch brite it.

I'm totally inspired. Have you ever taken off the coating of SR-77? I want to strip my Crash Axe now that it's worn a lot off already. Is that steel going to oxidize like crazy without a coating? I was thinking I could really buff it out shiney. Will that help, or will anything help a steel prone to rusting?

really nice. You should take it down to a 1000 grit see how nice that looks.
