Father and Son Wilderness Fun (PICS)

Great post. I like to see threads like this. I just spent a day out last weekend with my oldest daughter, and it seemed like only yesterday I was building fires to let her warm up and making hot cocoa for her when she was little. Her next birthday she will legally be an adult. Time flies by and we have to teach them what we can while we can and hope we teach them enough.

I enquired about the knife because I was impressed with the fact that this was the knife you had in the field that day, yet you at least support this site by getting at least a basic membership. I have seen several here that frequent the site who sport much more expensive knives yet who have opted for the free membership for years.

I asked about the knife to gain some insight into your thoughts on knives in general. The reason for this was my having been inspired by brother Rotte's last give-away to take a higher road with my next give-away.

I have been trying to figure out for a few weeks how I was going to go about it, and was going to do it for my 6000 post give away. I wanted it to include support for this site and this forum in particular, of which I am very fond, and I wanted it to include getting the family and children involved in the wilderness. I also wanted it to be about someone who was more interested in getting out and doing than which knife they were fielding.

Then along comes this post. The man takes his young son out on his first woods hike at a young age to get it all started, has a good grasp on things with the multiple tools. He's obviously more concerned with getting his son motivated and into the woods than impressing us with his blade-ware, and only having been a member for a month he supports the site.

Congratulations bro, you won my contest before I even knew what it was going to be. PM me with your name and address, I have some things I want to send to you in a few days. I do have to get the stuff together because while I had some idea of what I wanted to do I wasn't all together sure so I wasn't quite ready for it yet but I'll get it together as fast as I can. The only thing I ask is that we get to see pics of you fielding some of it on another outing with the boy and I'll look forward to seeing more outings from you in the future.

Wow! Thank you very much. I don't have a lot of money to buy expensive knives like most sported on this forum. I payed to be a member because I realized very quickly that this is a great site with many good members. I have received lots of good info and advice. If I have to give a little to support such a great forum such as this I will. Well worth it.

I really appreciate this. It will be part of my son and I on our adventures in the wild.

Thanks, J.W

In case inquiring minds want to know the knife in the first picture is a piece of junk that I took because my son thinks it is cool. It is not my "SURVIVAL" knife.
I was waiting for someone to comment on it. The SOG Flash 2 however is one knife that I do like. The machete is a Corona, it works very well for a cheaper machete. Nice good grip and feel.

When I first started reading this I thought you were referring to the rusted steel...whatever that is...in the 5th photo. I find lots of that sort of imagery here too, and my son always wants me to take pictures of it.

Regarding the knives in the photos...I assumed it was something I had not seen before and did not think to inquire. I try not to judge other people's cutlery...I started to once and quickly discovered that the knife handed to me had VERY deceiving looks. You never know...sometimes a guy will have a very plain looking custom built knife that will surprise the heck out of you....and other times a skilled person will do wondrous things with a very meager blade. For these reasons I refuse to respect (or disrespect) anyone because of a possession they came to own.

Heading out to the Missouri woods now...Enjoy life!

I'm thinking he threw that out there not understanding my series of questions in a pm I sent him.

High Density, congratulations my man. Now that camping trip next year will have even more memories for you & your bud. Any time out in the outdoors with your child is a special time, no matter the reason. Enjoy yourself & the gifts, I'm sure Mist will take care of you, trust me.

Mist, between you, Moose, & several others on this forum, you guys are slowing reviving my hope there is still some humanity left in this world. This class act on your part was & is top shelf in my book. Since you are one of what I refer to as the "veteran's" on here, I hope someday all the things you have done for us "newbees" comes back to you in spades. Thanks for your efforts, greatly appreciated.
Be safe.

You are correct. Some people on here have criticized me for not having "good" enough knives. (Not in this forum.) So I was a little brash. I think you can tell that I don't post anything to try to impress anyone. I collect NATO otf's. lol

People have a hard time understanding that. I do it because I like it.

A knife is a just a tool. Somebody who criticizes you because of your knife is also just a tool. Still, when comparing the above, some tools are a whole lot more useful than others :D :D

Great to see you out with the boy and don't you just love this time of year?

The autumn is a great time in these parts. Great weather this year in October and November. Plus I like the idea of my son and I not running into any Copperheads or Cottonmouths like in the spring and summer.

Glad you think so bro. After putting some thought into it our Mr. High Density here is about to be the new owner of a Fletcher Knives Delta Foxtrot model.

Since you're pretty new here HD you may not be familiar with the knife. You can see more about it here...

Got my stuff from Mistwalker today. The Fletcher Delta Fox Trot is phenomenal, well balanced and handles perfectly. I want to thank Mistwalker for this great gift. It will be with me until my son gets it. Thanks to Fletcher for a great knife.

Cool, glad it got there! Enjoy the knife man, I know I did. Dylan's ergos are fantastic and the balance on that one is fantastic. Also I already know how tough it is. When you dull it you can send it to Dylan to sharpen. It's still pretty sharp but not as sharp as it started I was testing Dylan's edge retention and that is still the original edge...so his edge retention is top notch as well.

Have fun with it, and I'll look forward to more outdoor posts from you in the future

Don't know how I missed this post before ?

Great stuff buddy, make the most the most of ya time with the little man because they soon grow up and prefer going on their X-Box and Facebook than spending quality time with their dads !

I took my son Michael out into the woods on a hike for the first time today. Just him and me, and our Dachshund Sam.lol He turns 3 next week and it is time. We did not go far from my moms house because it is Shotgun season for deer here. We have 48 acres of woods that nobody hunts on but I don't trust these trigger happy boys around here. I took him where I used to camp and have parties when I was younger. It is a very neat spot. My son is everything to me. It was a great day. Next spring we are going to camp here. Here are some pics.

That's an awesome little dude you have there. I love taking my kids out to explore like I did when I was little -- it really helps open your eyes to all the little things that seemed so amazing when you were young!

You are starting him on a path that will bring a lot of happiness for both of you through the years.

Edited: Here's my 3-year old just after we exited Washington's Ape Cave on the tough end.

Ahhhh. I remember that beauty. Some people might see that DF on the sheath and think, "Delta Foxtrot, I get it." Actually, that was my initials, Dylan Fletcher, because I had planned on that being my personal knife. lol.

If you ever want that sucker cleaned up, just pay shipping to and from and I'll clean it up and sharpen it for free. It would be a loss of character though.

Edit:...not you, the knife. lol
