I had to work early Sunday morning, but my wife told me that the first thing my son (almost 4) said in the morning when she told him it was daddy's day, "Can we get him a knife?" That's my boy! So I just placed an order for my first Griptilian, a mere $22 (after some gift cards). I decided to start with a regular size 550HG. I've been fondling them for a while. It should ship tomorrow, so I'll post pictures in a few days.

I saw someone post that they had modded one of their scales to accept a paid of SAK tweezers, I'm looking forward to trying this out!

can you do tweezers and a pen?

It's silly, but the pen is a seriously handy little thing to have.

I thought that the little needle that some SAK's come with might be helpful too. But that might be to hard. The tweezers and maybe the pen could be done fairly easy with a dremel I think.

the needle is another of my favorites. should be easy. Looking at my cybertool, it's not a hole in the plastic but a groove in the plastic. A couple passes with a good scribe should do it. or an xacto.

Somewhere on here I'm told there's a guy who does a lot of customizing. If I ever find him I'm going to make a modified nessie blade for my Outrider, and have custom scales with the pen and needle added.

What a cool and great gift! Sounds like your son is already on his way to being a knife nut too :D

I have a pair of nice tweezers on my keychain, but my keychain is getting huge! I'd love to slim it down in any way that I can. And I do like the idea of a pen!

Hopefully I won't ruin my knife scales!

When got him an oversize plastic SAK a few months ago and he just loves it! I thought about getting him a Griptilian training knife for fun, but $50 is pretty pricey for that. I might get him a low end Kershaw and dull the blade and blunt the tip.

Well, since I make them, I started making some for my oldest when he was just about to turn 4. I got a lot of crap for it, too!

What I did was make him a 4 inch "chef's knife" with a rounded front. then I decided to do the full heat reat and put a good handle on, and I put a 45 degree edge bevel on and rounded it off by stropping vertically.. At that point, it worked for bananas, but couldn't cut him.

He's about to turn 5 now and he has a bit of a real edge on it. It's sharp enough for oranges and cucumbers, but still just a 45 degree edge (but sharp now). In a year or so I'll go ahead and put a real kitchen knife edge on it, but leave the rounded front (half inch radius)

You could do the same thing with any old thrift shop steak knife. Nanners cut with forks, so you don't need an edge!

Those are good thoughts! I've had a lot of good talks with Titus about knives. I can ask him if wants to use one of mine, and he'll say, "Nope, its to sharp for me now, maybe when I'm older." And he makes a cutting motion with one hand on the other. He helps mom in the kitchen a lot, so he's got "the fear". Gotta love kids!

Naked,
That's cool! If he were old enough to pick one himself, he would have been hard-pressed to do a better job. The Grip' is a great folder. I have a "Standard" and "Mini" Ritter Grip - the only two folders I really use and have been very happy with them.

Koyote,
Just checked out your site - nice stuff. I will be checking back now and seeing what you have going on. I love the traditional look - very nice work.

OOOOOH a folding nessie. What a great idea!

Well, It's on my list, and some wharnies. I *think* I have a stock thickness that will work out.
