So Ive been doin some early father's day shoping for my dad and I decided on getting him a nice knife. He's always had knives before but never bought himself any quality ones. I thought I would ask if anyone on the forums had any advice for me. I want to get something for around $40-60 that looks nice and that is quality made. He doesnt like serrations. I dont think he'll really be puting too much of a beating on it, just for EDC use. Ive looked around at places such as benchmade, spyderco, crkt, and kershaw, but I though I'd get the opinions of the forum. Thanks:D

For a gift, I'd want to get something with a handle that wasn't black plastic (FRN) or black G10 (fiberglass.) Wood, metal, or micarta handles seem to me like the way to go.

For $40-$60, I like:

  • Kershaw Leek or Nakamura (might be a little more than $60)
  • Victorinox Farmer with Alox (metal scales)
  • Buck 110 or Prince (smaller)
  • Spyderco Cricket

Something traditional (but not ancient like Case) within that price range. Your best bet is a Kershaw. Because it's EDC, ideally it's around 3-4 oz range. My suggestion is Kershaw Leek. It's a simple and nice folder liked by many people, and it comes in many different finishes.

Edit: Victorinox would be nice too, if your dad is into multi tools.

traditional but nothing like a case and deffinitly a folder

um...How's that again?

Case is the epitome of traditional.

What does "traditional" mean to you?

I took that as meaning that he wanted a modern locking knife with more stylish handle materials and traditional blade shape - not a 'tacticool' knife.

I'd second the Buck 110 or Alox Farmer; heck get em both, should come out to about $70 together.

I bought my old man a Kershaw Wild Turkey about 8 Fathers Days ago and he loves that thing. A pointy slicer with a lockback, rosewood handles, satin bolster. Real classy, it just says Dad all over it
(Right in your price range too)

Sorry slip of the tongue what I was trying to get at was tactical....instead traditional slipped out...but I think I like what Im hearing so thanks guys

Allhough I do think my slip of the toungue may have generated some answers I wasnt quite looking for it gave me some more to think about....thanks!

I'm still confused.

You are looking for a tactical knife to give your dad? As in a one-hand-opening knife with a pocket clip?

If so, I would recommend a Spyderco Native or Spyderco Delica or a Benchmade Minigriptilian.

yeah thats what I was looking for all along...which is why I got so many confused answers...Do you prefer one of those to another? I have my own minigrip and I like that a lot but I was curious as to how you liked the native and the delica....Ive never owned a spyderco and dont really have a good feel for them.

They are different knives.
I have a Delica and a Native III and a Mini-grip 556.

The Delica is slim and you hardly know it is in your pocket.
The Native is somewhat larger and fills the hand more.
The Native III fills the hand a bit even more.
The Mini-Grip is a different beastie with its axis lock. The blade is a great shape though.

From a purely subjective perspective, I think the Delica is the most fool-proof gift knife. Some folks find the Native not comfortable to their hand. Others think it is great. Same with the Native III. I know some guys are a bit put off by the axis. It lets the blade flip out so fast. But I have yet to find anyone who does not think the Delica is a great knife. YMMV, but that's my thoughts. At the end of the day, though, you could cast lots. All of them are winners.

Well thanks I think Ill stay away from the benchmade just because ive already got a griptillian and i want him to get something totally new and different. The Delica sounds pretty nice. I think ill use my dad as a test subject for spyderco

I thoroughly recommend that you check out the Kershaw Damascus Skyline. Awesome knife, perfect size for EDC, very light weight, awesome looking damascus blade, super slick flipper, and for less than $50.

Your $40-60 price range is really a sweet spot for Kershaw. Junkyard Dog I/II or a RAM would also be good ideas if you want something beefier. I personally don't have an OD-1 yet but many people on here won't stop raving about them. The damascus skyline would make the coolest gift though IMO.
