Fatwood mother lode

JV3, anytime a resinous conifer dies, the roots continue to push sap up into the stump creating fatwood. So the answer to your question is both. Though from the craggy looking stumps most here post pictures of, I'm going to say they are from trees killed by nature. Either died standing, split and fell, or blown down by a storm.
