Fatwood Processing and Some Fiestarting With The Mrs.

G'day Brian

It looks like it's a handy size

Kind regards
Mick

Yeah, it's definitely a useful size knife, The handle is about the same length as my Sojourner and the blade is about an inch shorter. If I remember right its 4 1/2 inch blade 4 1/2 inch handle.

Awesome picks mistwalker and way to go Lisa. Kathy and I both watched your video.

Very cool indeed.

Bryan

Thanks Bryan, see I told ya I'd get her out with it when Autumn got here.

I was really proud of her on that last one, it took her just five times of sparking and she didn't knock her tinder out of place. She's getting pretty good at making fuzz sticks too.

Brian,

 for getting her into it! Good stuff! Maybe I'll follow your lead and practice some skills with my GF this weekend.

Thanks Russell, If she's going to at least part of the time be your hiking partner it could be a good idea...you could be injured or worse and her have a need to be able to do a few things....fire, shelter, water....

Next up with Lisa is batoning and fire under wet conditions. She was in the scouts and ROTC and has done a lot of things, even had her own fixed blade, mess kit, canteen and stuff when I met her but still has some things to learn.

Yeah, I know. The problem is making it fun and interesting for her...she's a little more...let's say, "carefree" in her outlook...doesn't believe anything bad could ever happen:grumpy:.

Yeah...I've had that problem with Lisa too. I just found a discrete way to turn it into sort of a challenge, and she is somewhat competitive. I don't care if she practices all the time or not, as long as she grasps the basic concepts and understands what is actually necessary to make certain things happen then I have faith in her ability to make it happen if needs be.

Well, I'll work at it more with my lady, but glad you got yours to get into it!

It took some time and some doing...I just finally found a way to put it into a context where she could enjoy the effort. In this particular case explaining to her that if she could get it she would pass the majority of the guys I personally know in fire starting ability :D . Whatever makes it fun for them will get them into it, and whatever gets them into it is a good thing ;) .

Her "carving" technique has been mentioned to me by a couple of people so I just wanted to say that in those pics the pressure being applied to the knife is minimal because the knife is scalpel sharp and is being applied her left thumb. The right hand is simply holding the knife in place, the is actually very little, if any at all, real possibility of a slip. It's a technique I use a lot and it offers a lot of control...jut looks...unorthodox I suppose.

G'day Brian
