Fatwood?

I'm planning on going in search of some myself, hopefully within the next week or so. Here in south jersey we have a lot of pine forests so I'm hoping I don't return empty handed.

There's a huge thread over at bushcraft usa in the fire section on the topic. I think it's Mistwalkers thread, full of pictures.

There are a few different locations on the tree to get some and when we are at Ethan's this weekend at the gathering I can get pictures of a stump, knots and the branches.

What kind of patina is this? I've become partial to the distilled white vinegar

its mustard with about a.teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to thin it out a little. i applied it.with a qtip and left it on for 45 mins per side. then i soaked some paper towels with apple cider vinegar and.wrapped the blade and left it on for.10 mins. that left those tiny paper towel dots all over it (very lightly)

I noticed a stihl in the background of one pic... That would be my choice of "roughing" tools. :) Looks like an 019T I had years ago

I second the Bushcraft USA Forum thread...Pages and pages of how to find fatwood with a ton if great pictures in that thread.

No pine trees in Austin. I wonder if you could get the same effect from a Juniper?

If you can find the exposed roots, that is a good place also. I sometimes see pines that were completely blown over and you have access to the whole root. I wondered about our Eastern red Cedar also, which I think is actually Juniper (I'll have to look that one up myself to see if thats right).
