Any ideas where I can buy a small amount of fatwood? I've looked around on the internet but I really don't want to buy 10 or 20 pounds of the stuff. Any ideas?
Go to your local Ace Hardware and if they don't already have it they can order it for you with no shipping charge involved. You can also order it online and have it shipped directly to your local Ace store with no shipping charge. You can buy a small bag for $5.99. Depending on the time of the year, they can be found at just about any hardware store, like others have mentioned. ACE, OSH, HD, Lowes.
I bought a bag at OSH, but the next time I was there they didn't have any. Then later when I was there I saw they had them again, so I'm pretty sure it's seasonal.
Are you talking about real, resin-filled sticks or the crap marketed by places like Wal-Mart? The Wally World stuff works well and is usually only seasonal and put out with the camping stuff. Honestly, I would just go out in the woods and find the stuff. This seems to be the ideal way to do it. then, you could do a picture tutorial on harvesting it
I just did that, but in german (and lots of pictures): German tutorial
If there is any real interest, I could translate it.
ETA: Basically I'm just saying, forget harvesting from the stump, it's way too much work. Search one that is partially ripped out of the earth, so that some big roots are free. Carve with your knive some of the bark away. If it's translucent and kinda red with a strong smell of resin underneath, just cut the root off (saw from a SAK is ample for that) and you have pounds of pure fatwood.
I think I could brush the rust off of my German enough to figure it out. Thanks for the tips though. I actually was wondering about grabbing some. I can find decent pines all over the place here.
Thanks guys. I checked Lowes today and no luck. They said that they may have it when the fireplace stuff gets in for the season.
I am talking about the real stuff, not the pressed crap.
I would love to harvest some, but the only woods I have readily available to me is a state park. I'm not sure the morning joggers would react well to me chopping at a stump on the side of the trail.
I guess I'll wait a while until the hardware stores are carrying more fireplace goodies. That is, unless someone has a little that they would like to sell me
