Doesn't matter what blade you have, but yes, #1 it should be sharp. Second #2, you should be pulling the cutting edge of the blade away from the base of the plant, in other words create some resistance to the blade so it will cut. Sounds to me like you're whacking across it. Or, grab a handful of the vegetation from the leafy end and then cut/slice down towards the stalk...your hand is creating the resistance for the blade to cut. This just takes some practice, and it's not a case of a CS versus an Ontario versus a Tramontina.
