favorite 2 blades

My two favorites which are often companions are the Vic Farmer and the Ahti Tikka

Another vote for the full size clip and coping/sheepsfoot secondary. I have spent a long time honing what works best for ME. I can get away with carrying a single small wharncliffe blade and conquer any task I see daily with it. I love using a <4" stockman for work and find the larger handle better for work, just hate carrying the brick in my pocket. Straight edge's work better for most tasks in my opinion. the tip being at the bottom makes it safer to plunge cut material vs a center tipped blade like a pen. I have grown to appreciate the shorter versions as found on stockmen knives. The longer the blade is, the more I want belly. A while back I had this knife commissioned by Jared Oeser, it is a Eureka Moose pattern.

The blade combo speaks for itself, very versatile. It was my first Moose and will be my last. I can see no other blade combo being better in that setup. The Clip blade gives you a fine point(equal to or pointier then a wharncliffe) and protects it with the belly. I love the pointy wharnie but those tips are fragile and always the first thing that hits something its not supposed to. It is easy to fix a dent or roll in the belly of a clip, you cant glue the tip of a wharnie back on WHEN you break it.

Now another thing to consider is the overall package of a knife and what you like. I have grown to appreciate thin knives. I do not really carry jack knives anymore because it is wasted design width in my eyes. I use my knives hard and still prefer them pretty thin to slice like sharks with freakin laser beams on their heads! The debate of jack vs pen configuration does not come down to strength it comes down to width for me. If I am going to carry a wide knife I will carry a stockman for the same wide penalty as a jack and get a third blade for the trouble! I bought this GEC 53 TK Cuban to test out how a bigger pen knife fits my needs(I modified the pen secondary into a coping)

It is close to perfection. A big issue for me is the main blade ratio to the handle size. Other shorter knives, have almost the same size blade.

The extra 3/8th" length of the 53 over the Oeser is not really needed for me, a little extra blade length is always welcome on the clip. While I also love the new profile of the secondary blade, it is thinner and smaller then I like. The added strength and stoutness of a stockmen sheepsfoot is much more desired by me.

In summary :D the clip blade is the perfect main blade for me. Very pointy and that fine point is protected so I can still use that big blade hard if needed. The secondary blade should be a nice stout little sheepsfoot to tackle all kinds of tasks from cutting out old caulking to opening blister packs(why I like the shorter length). I can not think of any situation I will come upon in my life that this single spring knife could not tackle. You could skin game if needed, cut fishing line, open boxes, cut bread, tear down a bunch of cardboard, whatever...

Another Clip & Spey fan.
The clip for it's point & a spey for the belly & almost chisel like tip that's good for scraping/gouging.

Since becoming interested in traditional folders recently I have noticed that I try to find knives with 2 blades that compliment each other both aesthetically and functionally. So far my favorite combination is the wharncliffe/clip. I was curious if anyone else looks for certain blade style pairings in a knife?

I'm partial to both the sheepsfoot and the pen. Hard to find both in a knife with two blades. But here's one...

I like one wanrcliff, or sheeps foot, or coping blade, paired with a spear or clip main.

I also like a clip and spey combo. It is a handy pairing.

Or Spear/clip (clipped pen)

I gave my wife a GEC #61 half congress in green banana bone which she uses a lot (cutting stalks off pumpkins).

I just bought a 61 half/cong in midnight jig bone because I like the combo, even though the SF sits a tad proud.
