Does the surplus have any kind of lacquer or coating? I've read that cheaper ammo will sometimes have a coating to help with corrosion and can cause malfunctions after the chamber heats up. Apparently it softens and gets sticky.

That's been my experience with the Russian Tula in my M4 during full rock&roll mode. Other than that it's an ok cheap range ammo.

I shoot Tul in mine all the time. I usually start out with it and move to something else when it warms up just to keep that from happening.

I don't know if you guys ever visited the Box o' Truth site before, but during my time there a lot of talk went on about lacquered ammunition. The guy who ran the forum once said that he tried heating up the lacquer on a spent casing with the live flame of a lit torch but still couldn't get it to melt.

I don't know if it's true or not. It's just something I've read. I'm sure it depends on the lacquer/protectant the factory used.

Never been to that site but do know from whats happened to me going rock&roll mode with a hot barrel, the Tula has jammed my rifle. I have a full unopened case left , plus a couple hundred loose rounds. For handguns and some rifles I've had no problem but I started buying the GI ammo can Federal for my M4.

Well there's always this site for recommendations on quality defensive ammo.

I think Lucky Gunner could have saved a few dollars and just linked to your site, lol.

Good stuff Charlie.

I'm slowly gravitating towards an AR platform, I know very little about it, but in the meantime, why are heavier bullets less common in 5.56, i.e. 80 grain. Or am I wrong in my understanding? I sometimes see manufacturers stating something like projectiles in excess of 65 grains should not be used. Why would they state that?

Different bullet weights require different twist rates for best performance. They're a finicky bunch when it comes to things like accuracy.

Steel ammunition even copper or lead work good.

.177,4.5,9mm,10mm any ammunition with good accuracy.

Firing clear glass 6mm will jam a pistol i really don't recommend using them.

Spit wads !
But my Dad told me once about a kid who shot rabbit turds into his teacher's bun with a sling shot. Questionable with a blow gun though.
I'm just saying . . .

I got swats once for shooting bent nails into the cork pin up board in the classroom with a rubber band between my fingers.
True story.
