What is everyones favorite belt for rough grinding blades? make and grit plz. I currently am useing the 3m 963 in 50 grit.

Erik- I really like the Blaze orange in 60X. I hang onto them longer than most guys as I use the old ones the grind the heck out of mild steel stuff for little fixtures and doo-dads around the shop.

Haven't tried the 3M in a long time, but I should get some and try them side by side with the Blaze.

Blaze 60 for rough ins, blaze 120s to finish the main grinds then 220 norax for clean up before the HT...

I've been using 3m 977 cubitron in 50 grit since i started knifemaking. i recently saw a recommendation to use the 3m 967 60 grits on titanium.., so i baught a few. man do these belts rock!! cant wait to try them on a blade.

Same here. Blaze 40 then 120. I have profiled and rough ground about a dozen knives with the same couple, I guess I'll see another dozen from this 40 and 120 couple ...

Most ceramic belts need to be run Very Fast to cut for any length of time. What I like about the 3M 967, is they cut for a long time while running at a slower speed and seem to need less pressure to get it done. I did a side by side comparison between Blaze and 967 a couple years ago and the 3M came out on top in my shop.

Don brings up a good point. I didn't feel like I was getting the most out of the Blaze belts on my KMG, so I upgraded it to the 6" drive wheel. I do my rough grinding with it balls out.

If you're running your grinder slower, then I don't think Blaze belts are that great.

You've got me wanting to try the 3M again Don. :)

I'm with Nick, I grind with the VFD on 100%. If I'm doing a swoopy(technical term) plunge the grinder is about half speed but I've got the Klingspor yellow belts on. The square plunge I do on the disk.

Nick, if you do try 3M again, make sure you get the 967 (gold color). The red 977 do nothing at all for me. My grinders at wide open are still not fast enough to get good life out of Blaze belts, they cut like hell at first but taper off quick.

I do love the yellow Klingspors (120, 220, 400) for finish work, not a better belt for that.
