Favorite BK9 carry option?

I like the looks of that one!

Out of curiosity, does anyone carry it scout style in the small of the back? That option would make better sense for me except, well, the knife ends up wider than me. Does anyone carry it on their back?

The problem with anything on the back is you can't see the sheath when you need to put the knife away. Of course you can still sheath the knife when carried in this fashion, you just need to be careful.

Ah. Makes sense.

Totally agree. I played around with back sheaths for a bit, and while it was comfortable to carry while walking around, it is extremely difficult to re-sheath. Also, not very comfortable if you're going to sit in a chair (that has a back at least) and you can't really carry a pack with it on.

Also, different clothing impacts re-sheathing to a greater degree (more stuff in the way, and then it can limit arm mobility).

So while Dundee style carry is fancy looking, and might work well if you don't need to access the knife frequent, but reality seems to indicate that it's not ideal for most use cases. And, I'd you re-watch the movies, Dundee caries on the belt most of the time "in the bush", with the fancy back carry for more formal occasions.

Of course, you may find it works for you, so good luck with finding what works for you :).

"[F]ancy back carry for more formal occasions is what I think I will go with; I'll just get my tuxedo tailored to allow for a little more room in the back.:D

You just need to have Todd whip you up a formal bowie for those special occasions. A gentleman doesn't show up to a black-tie event with any old thing.

Being both frugal and old school, I use the factory supplied sheath hanging from my belt at my right hip. As it's one of my primary "around the farm EDCs" I've gotten to the point I don't even notice it most of the time. I wore it from 7:30a to 2p today and almost forgot to take it off when I left for the 40+ mile parts run to Austin.

I use a Junglas sheath that River-8 modified with his cargo pouch and suspension system and then I made a baldric strap for it.

Hey brother, could you post up some more info on your rig? Love that pouch that's attached. PM me if you want, or put up here for everyone. Either way. I understand that the sheath is ESEE kydex and River 8 did some mods but I'd love to know the exact specs of that pouch. Is that a pouch he makes? It looks like something I'd love to have made up (of make myself). Thanks again grunt..

I've carried mine cross-draw in front but baldric style works better. As a bonus, you can rotate the rig for back carry if you want.

Under the armpit works great. You can make a concealed carry rig in about 10 secs with some paracord. I think it's called a ranger rig or something like that.

Ok, so I bought ESEE Junglas sheath because at the time no one was making kydex for them without having to send the knife, I didn't want that wait. So I shipped the sheath to River-8 and he made the pouch out of double layer cordura, the suspension system is 5/8 nylon web, I had to rebuild most of it myself so I used some 3/4" nylon web I had here. It's a pretty slick system he came up with, there's a brass ring that the belt loop attaches to, that then has 2 anchor points on the sheath that allows it move freely while you walk, sit, kneel whatever, and the orientation of the pouch allows it to open "up" when kneeling.

Awesome dude. Thanks for the reply. Yeah I'd love to get something like that made up. The ESEE pouches, whilst cool, just don't fit much in them. That rig looks like you could fit heaps in there. I really like the idea of minimal carry but still having enough gear to not be 'uncomfortable'. Looks like a perfect rig to me. Thanks again..

That picture of everything laid is what I carry in it most of the time.

Another option is to DIY,

I used an ALICE shotshell pouch for that one.

Like ocnLogan has shown I have my 9's belt loop folded over like that. However, I have found the 9 carries so much better cross draw. So with the sheath set up like that, you can run through the stock belt loop which allows you to move/pivot the knife. Allowing you to move it where comfy when needed, then pivot it forward to draw and resheath the knife. If you didn't want it to move a simple small biner to the belt loop works well.

For something as large as the 9 I think cross draw, high carry works well. Although I really would like to make a simple leather sash type sheath for it with a static line, then carried on the back right hip through the belt... Love carrying knives that way and I think the 9 would be comfy like that. Would certainly reduce its footrpint.

A lot of good suggestions in this thread. I expect mine to go in/on the pack for a while. Then I'll try the hip, hip cross draw, and over shoulder underarm sling. Thanks, guys!

I've tried the crossdraw with the 9, and personally I found it constrictive when I bent over to start fires, pound in guyline pegs, etc (the sheath would dig into my stomach). Other than that though it was great. Does the crossdraw interfere with your ability to crouch down, or do you just not do that enough to worry about it?

Not carrying the sheath round every day or nothing, but that's why I left it loose too move around the belt. If you needed to bend over sit down etc, just push the sheath/knife back when not in use or doing one of those activities.

personally, I do scout (small of the back) carry now and then and it's always a smaller blade, 5" blade at the most (my 16 has a permanent residence in a scout sheath), that I can index along the side or spine to guide back into the sheath. A small knife also means it won't be uncomfortable while seated.

It's also a booger when you get in your car and forget to adjust your BK9. Youch.
