Stonewash and machine satin for me. Stonewash masks the scratches and blemishes from use very well, and it just looks cool. The machine satin is just a clean, simple finish.

Coated or polished to a mirror, those are the only finishes in my book
Really do not understand why anyone would want a scratchy dull looking blade

Thanks again for all the responses! I confess I'm a little surprised at the strong showing of stonewashed finishes in the poll, and find it very interesting.

It is interesting...but there are trends in this game that ebb and flow. Recently stone wash is popular...I predict that in time machined swirled finish will even make a comeback;)

Your pic isn't showing for me :( Are you speaking of "engine-turned" finishes, perhaps?

Like these Warthers?

Favorite finish for me depends on the knife. For a utility-type fixed blade, a satin or working-grade finish.
For a pocketknife, a highly mirrored blade, like the old crocus polish.

Stone washed here for folders. I've had bead blasted rust speckle by the end of the day, clipped to the top of my admittedly humid, sweaty, stinking, winter boots.

Bump in case anyone who might care to hasn't voted yet. This has been helpful, thanks again!

I'd vote, but there's no way I could pick two. It all depends on what I'll be using the knife for, whether the finish "goes with" the design, whether or not the knife's carbon steel and would benefit from a coating or patina...

Digging patinas and acid etched has caught my interest as well. However, default is stonewashed.
