Favorite blade steel?

I hope they run it optimized for thin edges and edge holding.
As I often say at work : "Hope" .
There's that word again .
Keep some aggressive reprofiling stones handy is my advice . Maybe even a belt sander if you are adventurous .
I am .
PS : Oh !
maybe you ment the heat treat optimized for thin edges .
Maybe if BBB is hanging around . ;)

I remember when Benchmade was running D2 for there premium steel and most spydercos were in good ole VG-10, those were much simpler times 😂 now some people consider those inferior steels but I think they are still very good for most use!

Ya, heat treat for thin edges. They’re not going to diverge from their primary grind geometry.

Everyone just likes the "new hotness". Like 95% of tasks people use knives for would do just fine with lower end steel. We all like to collect though so, unfortunately, new steel it is lol.

My favorite at the moment is Blue #2, mostly because it’s used in my most recent purchase. Beyond that VG-10 and Pro Cut are high on my list. CPM S60V was good too but is no longer available. I had an old Kershaw Random Task.

Late to the party, but for an outdoor knife I want something tough and stainless with decent edge retention. Throw me on the Magnacut list.
For edc and work-knife type stuff I really like XHP. My experience with CruWear and K390 has been excellent too, so at the moment I like the three about equally.

Steel has become less important to me.
But … lc200n
Cruwear
I do like m4, kinda wish I had a knife with it I enjoyed carrying more.
S30v
I’ll think of more later I’m sure.
S30v gets spit on a lot nowadays for not having the right numbers in the name, but its pretty much overkill for 95% of use.

Just because something would do just fine doesn't mean you can't appreciate the better steels we have available today. I think the rational person doesn't look at aus 8 and say "that's trash steel" they just say magnacut at a higher hardness is better.

I mean the fact that we have so many options from just factory knives alone that are high carbide/high hardness with amazingly blends of properties...is pretty sweet. People that want more traditional older steels can use them. I still do and guessing you do as well.

Well Aus 8 is pretty trash to be honest. I think more along the lines of 154CM and the like.

Why is it trash?
It is tough and stainless. Its edge retention is average but it is easy to sharpen.

When did edge retention become the only measure of if a steel is good or not? (This is a general question).
It was great in its day and it fine now too.....Lotsa steel snobbery...😜......But everyone wants the BEST....🙄

Its ok. Better steels exist at the same price, so its genuinely just outdated now.

I just bought yet another Rat 1 in AUS8 not long ago since I gave the last one away again. The D2 version may keep the edge longer but the AUS8 won't rust in my pocket on a sweaty weekend doing weekend yard projects and then forgetting about it in the pocket of the shorts tossed in the hamper. My fault but still. Would it thrill me to no end if they went to literally anything better than AUS8? Of course, that's why I own the red and green G10 S35VN versions of the Rat 1. And yet I still like the AUS8 in the pocket for whatever reason. Old reliable? Dunno. Thought I would fall in love with the 1.5 being the sweet spot size and in MagnaCut. Cannot fathom why not.
