favorite blade steel?

The ones that really stand out for me are Buck's 440C, Cold Steel's VG-1 and N690Co. All these steels take a killer edge and hold it long enough for this kid.

S30V, VG-10, CPM-154/RWL-34 and Good old 1095 carbon / INFI

I have to choose just one knife, I'll take something with 1095 carbon, so that probably makes 1095 my favourite.

I'm hoping the next Spyderco Mule ends up being the Takefu Super Blue

+1 on the Takefu Super Blue. Great steel supposedly, been waiting a long time to try it out.

BTW, wasn't the OP asking about fav FOLDER steel?! where did all these categories come from?! I guess everybody is too eager to share their knowledge in knives/steels or something....

VG-10

S30V chips if you look at it wrong.

I've cut hard plastic zip ties (notorious for chipping S30V) and never had a problem, let alone the other hard items I've cut with it, I could go on to infinitum, but I won't bother. Do you have any examples of any of your S30V knives chipping?

Yep! I was at a house my buddy was building and I stabbed my Benchmade 930 kulgera in a sheet of drywall and the blade chipped in 2 spots. One long chip and one deeper chip.

It either chipped going in or coming out.

I had an S30V knife chip on cardboard. After six sharpenings it stopped.

Since it stopped, did you conclude that maybe during the factory sharpening process the edge got heated and ruined the treatment? Once you sharpened it yourself you got to an undamaged area, perhaps.

:barf:<-- Is that a foot in mouth smiley, because it may be appropriate for me. I just don't think that S30V is that weak of a steel, or even a bad steel because people have had problems with it chipping. I just think it's maybe difficult to get correct, this may be why people are finding the flawed examples of it and discrediting the steel as a whole.

Favorite folder steels (because of edge holding)= CPM's S90V and M4
Favorite fixed steels= CPM 3V and INFI (for toughness first and then edgeholding)
Other great folder steels IMO are S30V, CTS-XHP, and N690co for edge holding and ease of sharpening
Also like BRKT's A2, looking forward to trying out M390 on a pre-ordered BM710
