The term bladesmith implies something different than what you are asking in the rest of your question. I think you mean knife designer or knife maker or both. A blademsith to me implies someone that would forge their own steel. Devin Thomas comes to mind immediately.
In no particular order:
Warren Osbourne
Phil Wilson
Tom Krein
Ken Onion
Chris Reeve
Rick Hinderer
Duane Dwyer
Yun from YunaKnives
Fred Perrin
Andrew Demko
Ray Laconico
Tony Bose
Gayle Bradley
Sal Glesser
Mike Snody
RJ Martin
Brad Southard

I could like about 50+ more makers, but honestly there are way too many to name. This is a list of my absolute favorite knife designers and makers.

My top two are Andrew Demko and Rick Hinderer. I also like Elishewitz and Lambert. One who I think is up and coming is Alan Davis. He is getting ready to make me a custom edc of my specs that I want. He is doing some real nice work and you can not beat his price! THANKS! Kevin :D

The ones that I'm ogling over right now include

Bill Siegle
Jeremy Horton
Matt Bailey
Matt Lamey
Matt Caldwell
(what's with all the Matt's anyways?)

and I'm just really getting started on custom makers. So many to check out and so little time and money.

i havent bought anything from them (yet) but im like'n Andy Roy, i don't know there names off the top of my head but the NWA guy, and the off the map guy
