AH Ha, I have been trying to remember "the master and Margarita" for years now. I read it in college and loved it but couldn't femember or find the title. other favs would include W gibsons work, GRR martin's fire/ice, art and lies by Janet Winterson so many books so little memory...

I take this is a fiction thread.

Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
The Princess Bride by William Goldman
Cryptonomicon by Neil Stephenson
The Stars My Destination aka Tiger, Tiger by Alfred Bester
White Jazz by James Elroy
The Godfather by Mario Puzo
Rumble Fish by S.E. Hinton

I didn't know Clancy had a book by that title... I might have picked a different title for mine if I'd known...

(hope this doesn't come off as spam, it was the first link I got when I Googled my title)

Oh... The Stand is one of my favs. Armor by John Steakley IS my favorite. LotR series is excellent, but I didn't really care for Silmarillion.

Grim, it's Red Storm Rising. :) Your link has it as Red God Rising :D

You are correct, Armor is great. Did you read his Vampire$? Several years ago, I heard him interviewed on the radio and he said he was going to Hollywood to write movies and give up novels. I checked IMDB and he hasn't been that prolific.

Yeah, I know they're not identical, but it's close enough... Maybe I should hire a lawyer and sue him for his profits... :D

Yeah, I've read Vampires and it was quite excellent. I looked forward to John Carpenter's adaptation (titled originally enough as John Carpenter's Vampires...) and it was LAME! Felix wasn't even in the book. It was like he skimmed a couple chapters and decided to use 1/5 of what he read. I'm hoping that someone remakes it and does it right. (I think felix is the right name, it's been a while since I've read it, and my brother's borrowed back his copy!)

All time favorites? Hmm…
  • When We Were Orphans – Kazuo Ishiguro
  • VALIS – Philip K. Dick
  • The Brothers Karamazov – Fyodor Dostoevsky
  • The Stand – Stephen King
  • American Pastoral – Philip Roth
  • Swan Song – Robert R. McCammon
  • Lolita - Vladimir Nabokov
  • Infinite Jest - David Foster Wallace
There's probably a lot of stuff I missed. Clive Barker for one has written some very cool books.

I notice a number of Philip K. Dick fans here. How many of you have read his The Man In The High Castle? It is one of the best alternate history books ever written.

Yeah… The Man in the High Castle was definitely a great book. I should try to reread it sometime. :)

Another one I like of his is Confessions of a Crap Artist. It’s not science fiction at all, but I think it’s some of his best work.

I actually took a course on Philip K. Dick in college a few years back. (No one ever believes me when I tell them that though… LOL!) It was very cool, but I had to read a lot of his books in a relatively short time period, so some of them kind of blend together for me.

There are still many books of his that I haven’t read. He was a prolific author.

and my guilty sci pleasure is David Eddings the Belgerath series.

I've just finished STALINGRAD and FALL OF BERLIN by Anthony Beevor.Exelent books. Now I'm reading A WRITER AT WAR by Vasilly Grossman. He was at the battle outside of Moscow,Stalingrad, kursk and the fall of Berlin. His notes were used by Beevor when he wrote his books and Beevor translated Grossmans notes for this new book.

" The Magus" by John Fowles, and if you ever run out of titles, remember "War and Peace" it deserves it's reputation.
