Favorite Busse/Swamp Rat/Scrap Yard?

I don't own any Swamp Rat's or Scrap Yard's but I've had some of them....BUT:

Busse: SHBM (large)....SARsquatch (medium)....ABA (small)

Swamp Rat: Rat Daddy (large)....Chopweiler (medium)....Dogskinner (small)

Scrapyard: Dog Father (large)....SS6 (medium)....SS4 (small)

My all time two favorite knives overall though are the SHBM 1/300 and the Chris Reeve Sebenza. Not too much I couldn't do between those two knives :D

the only busse's i own are FFFBM,ASH-1 & GW.the ASH-1 is by far my favorite although i think the NMFBM and HACK "BC" might change that.

favorite swamprat is the CW

favorite scrapyard is the CGDM.i only like the combat grade version.

Favourite Busse now is definitely the FFBM. But I fear that may change once the NMFBM arrives. :p In my opinion, the bigger Busses are the better ones. The smaller they get, the less "superior" they are compared to other knives in the same size range. Busse's big knife designs like the FFBM really strike my fancies and INFI of course really shines there, but the smaller designs like the GW and AD have some features that in my experience lower performance - such as the choils. That said, I do think my GW sees more use than my FFBMs, although the difference isn't that large.

As for Swamp and Yard, don't really have any faves there. They're not for me, really: not quite as good as Busses, but just as "hard" to get, so there's really no point to me. When I've got the time and the funds, why hunt for the lesser knife when I can hunt for a Busse? ;)

Although I respect your opinion, I have to disagree. I think INFI is all around great steel, even in smaller blades like Game Warden due to it's excellent stain resistance and edge holding. Ok, maybe not as good as D2 but not far behind. I can also say that smaller Busses are superior to others of same size because they can cut just as well yet remain strong and tough instead of being brittle.

BC - AK47: Nothing from any of the other companies can fill that role.
SR - INFIcoot: EDC (LMS/'coot/SS4 blade with comfy tan ResC handles)
SY - DFLE (if I could have 2, I'd go with a DFCG and a [tan] S6.)

I've got about the same number of ScrapYards as Busse Combat knives (I currently have the same number of each, 47 [not counting two NMFBMs on preorder]) -- to each their own, but I find ScrapYard's ResC handles to be more comfortable and I'm more likely to use them (as opposed to just collect them) due to their lower cost.

We don't even disagree, it seems. I just chose my words badly. :foot:

INFI, of course, is a great steel in both large and small blades. I would rather have a 3" blade of INFI than a 3" blade of D2, 1095, S30V, VG10 or pretty much anything one normally sees, because INFI has great edge-holding and is still extremely tough.

My problem is that while I think the large Busse designs like the FFBM are very efficient large knife designs, I think the small Busse designs like the GW are much less efficient small knife designs. INFI isn't the problem - the design of the smaller Busses is. There are things in small Busses that serve no important purpose, and actually lower performance: the choil on the GW, for example, has absolutely no benefit that I can see that's worth the lowered performance in precision work that the choil causes. So, while the steel is great, the design of the knife itself is not as efficient as many other designs are, not in the kind of precise work one would expect to use a small knife for. I've said that so often it's probably really annoying some folks and for that I apologize, but I think it's still on topic. :o

I fell truly in love with the ASH1 LE.
I owned Busses in all sizes but this one is the perfect all around knife for me.

+1 - My thoughts / feelings exactly...

I similarly feel (although I don't understand why or how) that some Busse fans tire of hearing me "Hoping" for improvements in design on smaller knives..... and more reasonable prices on SATIN finishes. Sorry for the repitition. But, I LOVE INFI steel and "HOPE" ( / "want") to see designs that work for me and at prices that I can justify. I can sometimes swing and justify the CG prices. But, I HATE coated blades. I am willing to pay a "Reasonable" increase in price for a decent satin finish (CE blades are not decent finishes). But, IMO, $20 increase for smaller knives, $30 for mid-size and $40 for larger knives is MORE than enough up-charge for satin finishes.

INFI steel is the most amazing knife steel I know of for across the board use - large to small knives. In all fairness, depending on use, there are some steels that are more practical for certain uses. But, most any steel that competes with INFI on some level (say edg-holding) gets spanked on other characteristics (like toughness).

As is, I have to shop elsewhere for my smaller fixed blades. And I am getting tired of "Finishing" certain CG blades to a worthy level of finish. Most LE's are just WAY too pricey for me. More power to those of you who justify those prices. And even certain CG blades are just too pricey for me. I can't justify spending $500++++ on a coated chopper. - ultimate chopper or not. But, again, more power to those who can.

I am still "Hoping" for a version of the AD and some others I would like without the choil and Talon Hole:

Improved version of the BAIII:

Sorry I missed these that had small reasonably non-obtrusive Talon Holes and no Choils:

I would love to see INFI Anniversary Editions of the above two (also in Satin at a "Reasonable" price please).

Favorites:

Busse: SARSquatch (stripped and made satin) or my modified SJTAC (stripped, made satin, removed the ramp and some minor handle fit tweaks)

Swamp Rat: (too tough to pick a favorite) Chopweiler & Camp Tramp (close even if different); Ratmandu; Bog Dog, HRLM

Scrap Yard: DFLE and SS4

.

If I could have only 3 knives, and one of each, then:
Busse - FBM (maybe the NMFBM soon)
Swamp Rat - Rat Trap
Scrap Yard - Dumpster Mutt

But as far as favorite designs:
Busse - Saber Grind SFNO
Swamp Rat - Rat Trap and Camp Tramp
Scrap Yard - Dumpster Mutt

+1 million on what Elen and DWRW said

As for my picks.

SAR5 (currently under construction, taking about 1" off the handles length, making it narrower, thinner and contoured, possibly grinding the swedge into a drop point.)

Scrap Yard "Yard Keeper" is just a fantastic knife. Ground the choil so its usable, though how nice would it be to not have to use a stupid finger choil and have an extra 3/4" of blade, or the same blade and a knife 3/4" shorter.

Dont own a swamp rat, and frankly none of them are particularly appealing to me.

I think the SAR5 could be moved high up onto my favorites list. And the mods you are looking to make should be a worthy improvement.

The SAR5's Busse factory blade is fine ... once "strippped!!!" and made full convex. But, in all fairness, IMO, the handle needs to modified enough that it might be too different to be compared to the factory SAR5 much anymore.
