Let's hear some of the ways you guys like to carry your large blades. I'm talking 7" or larger. Heavy chopper/camp knives. I love leather and made a dual carry for my Tusker. It can be slipped in between the belt with a stud on the front as a stop or carried traditionally by the belt loop. I also like to strap a large knife like this to my pack and carry my smaller 4 incher on my belt. let's hear some other variations.

On those days when I carry a big blade it goes into my pack. For me a sturdy leather sheath like the one you pictured is just fine. I have no reason to belt carry such a knife.

Nice work BTW.

I like to carry mine cross draw style at a 50-60 degree angle, yet cant find a sheath maker who does this

i carry my battle mistress-e in an okuden kydex with a tec-lok. i have the tec-lok set up with a cant for a more comfortable carry. i find the handle doesn't stick me in the ribs so bad this way.

I ussually strap a larger knife on the strap of my pack, vest, or LBE. Stays out of the way but is easily accesible. If not like that I'll just belt mount it with the tip of the sheath secured to my leg with some paracord.

Like this just on the opposite shoulder and a little lower. (I know its from Hollywood but this method is actually realistic and has been used)

I usually carry just a small neck knife on me and my fixed blade goes on my shoulder pack.

Either on the side:

Or this year I'm gonna try this setup with the Estwing Hatchet added when I need to. (not totally sure how well the hatchet is gonna ride like this yet)

Scott,
Great post bro!!

For the larger blades I tend to prefer a kydex rig like

DIS one!!

1. Behind the belt - on the back side.
2. Behind the belt - front side.
3. Under the left arm.
4. On the back - behind the neck.

does ranger also make the smaller knife in your pic??? really interested to find more info on it.......thanks

I carry my knives on my pants belt or pistol belt. My real big knives, 9-15", I carry on my pack, but I always have a fixed blade on my pants belt. Military mindset, first line, I don't like getting knocked off my horse and off goes my knife. I always want one with me. Just like I always want my pistol on my side. You'll usually find you'll soon set a rifle/shotgun down and get busy doing something only to turn around the bears sitting on your long arm.

I carry my CU7, left hand cross draw on my belt, but am right handed. I like my knives high and tight on the belt, just in front of my right arm. When carrying the Becker, I have a backup fixed blade in my rucksack.

I don't like strapping my blade to a pack or bag. That means it's out of my sight and easy reach. Both could be hazzardous to my well being.

IMO, nothing beats a dangler sheath for large blades- the swivel allows the blade to move with your leg for comfort- while crouching or sitting, as well.

At one time I had rigged the sheath of my Gerber BMF to ride horizontally along the underside of my Mountainsmith daypack. It was onobtrusive, out of the way but immediately accessable. Having the knife where it was made for a blazing fast draw from virtual concealment. :D

It also cost me the knife somewhere along a trail!!!

These days I always have a handgun for things that need shooting and there is always have folder in my pocket for anything that needs cutting in a hurry. My fixed blade goes in my pack. I have yet to run into a situation that "instant chopping".

I have gotten away from carrying a fixed blade on my belt, mainly because of the discomfort, the added weight, and the provocative nature of 'brandishing' a big ole' hunk-o-steel. KCook had a good point about being separated from your gear. Maybe with one of those 'dangler' sheats that Rat showed would do the trick.

My SAR rig..
I carry my Busse Heavy Heart in a heavily modified Okuden A-7T rig. I comspired with Brian a little bit on this, told him my plans, and he made some excellent recommendations. The idea came from River8..

This is the overall look of the rig..

I carry:

  • 3 pieces of Pitchwood
  • 1 Mk 13 Smoke/illumination signal
  • 10 ft of 550 cord
  • 1 Metal Match with attached hacksaw blade
  • 1 35mm Film canister filled with cotton balls and vasoline
  • 1 Mini survival compass
  • 1 Swisstech tool with LED light
  • 3 Ranger Bands (Large rubber bands made from old innertube)
  • 1 Small Carabiner

All of this fits nicely on my thigh, and allows me to have access to all of it in an instant, rather than digging through my pack to get at it!
