Favorite carry systems for large blades.

My SAR rig..
I carry my Busse Heavy Heart in a heavily modified Okuden A-7T rig. I comspired with Brian a little bit on this, told him my plans, and he made some excellent recommendations. The idea came from River6..

......snip......

All of this fits nicely on my thigh, and allows me to have access to all of it in an instant, rather than digging through my pack to get at it!

EXCELLENT!!! (Hopefully you don't have any patents pending on that design, because I might just copy that for my own personal "tactification".) :D

Something with a blade up to 7 or 8 inches, I usually just carry on my belt behind my right hip. Maybe a little further back if I'm also carrying a pistol on that side.

For my big bowie, I always carry it tucked through my belt crossdraw, held in place by dual studs. That is, there is the "normal" frog stud to keep it from slipping down through the belt, but also a second stud below the belt to keep the scabbard in place while drawing the knife. This is a wooden scabbard; I'm not sure how I'd feel about tucking a leather scabbard through my belt on something this long.

A big advantage to this style is that the knife sits much higher up on your body, so length is less of an issue. It's also easy to adjust it or take it off without removing your belt.

Nope! Feel free to plagerize it all you want. Drop Brian at Okuden an email. He takes awhile (6-8 weeks), but his stuff is really top shelf. The nylon I sewed with an industrial machine I bought at a thrift shop for $35, (had it cleaned/repaired for another $60..)

Good Luck!

Black web belt with Becker Brute in original kydex sheath strapped along right leg and a typical military canteen above my left butt cheek. They roughly balance each other out. I like the knife strapped to my leg as it is a one hand release then as I usually have a gun or fishing rod in the other. I also have a Swiss army rucksack with a pile of buckle tie downs all over it. I picked up a tomahawk this winter and will likely strap it to the pack, as an alternative to humping the Becker around.

I ussually strap a larger knife on the strap of my pack, vest, or LBE. Stays out of the way but is easily accesible. If not like that I'll just belt mount it with the tip of the sheath secured to my leg with some paracord.

Like this just on the opposite shoulder and a little lower. (I know its from Hollywood but this method is actually realistic and has been used)

how do you secure it to the strap?

The Mountainsmith Maverick is an awesome pack in that it is exceptionally easy to conceal large blades like machetes and tomahawks without taking up any space. It has two large pockets on the sides, which are attached to the pack on the ends, which leaves a tunnel between the pack and pocket-perfect place to stick a large blade. There's a compression strap on each side in the perfect spot to mount the sheath, very easy access and it keeps the sheeple from bitching

I tend toward the drop-leg, keeps it below the pack, etc., but still handy...

Ok, ok; I need to be stopped :o !

I strap my big choppers (battle mistresses) to one of the 4-wheelers or the tractor, whatever I happen to be tooling around in that day. I don't get out into "the wilderness" much, I prefer riding to hoofing it up and down the mountains on our farm. Let the machines carry the heavy stuff, they don't mind the weight.

We have a Busse NMFBM semi-permanently mounted on the tractor, along with a pair of loppers- you can see the loppers poking out off of the roll bar on the tractor in this pic. Need to get a gun rack on that Gator still. Not shown in this picture is my little Yamaha 4-wheeler, which is my preferred mode of transport. It's hard to "get air" in a big tractor or a Gator. :D And the smaller 4 wheeler doesn't tear things up too much if the ground is wet.

Where can you pick up a Baldric rig? I carry my large knives on my left hip because I always have a pistol on my right.

I always carry choppers either strapped to the pack or on a Baldric rig. Never on the belt. Too damn heavy. I was born without a butt so having anything heavy attached to my pants pulls 'em down.

Sounds like you just need some good suspenders. ;)

Actually, I have been looking lately at some sets of traditional leather belt/suspenders. I'd like to have a matching set either brown or black leather belt with suspenders. It would be nice to be able to load up my pockets and belt with gear. Usually I don't have anything but a folder in one of my pockets simply because I don't want to keep having to pull my pants up. lol Everything stays in or on the pack.
