Who makes your favorite damascus?

Lately, Devin Thomas Spirograph is at the top of my list.

What do you like?

Devin's Spirograph and Meier's Calico Rose are beautiful. For some reason I am also drawn to Rados Turkish Twist.

Shane Taylor, his mosaic patterns are works of art! Kirk Rexroat makes pretty neat patterns. Then there's Barry Gallagher,Ed Cafferey,Rick Dunkerley, Wade Colter(the Montana bunch) Don't forget Hank Knickmeyer and Steve Schwarzer, these guy's keep crankin'out the most incredible and complex patterns... truely masters of their craft!

Eggerling Mosaic patterns. They just keep getting better and better.

Don't forget to pay your taxes...they eventually become my knives:)

Why does Montana with its small population
seem to have by far the most talented Damascus makers?

One reason Montana has so many guys making some awesome damascus knives because of the personalities of a bunch of them who have put together a strong state organization. I have always wanted to go to one of their hammerins (with the obligatory side trip to Glacier N.P.). The ones I have been able to meet are some of the finest people around.

Gus, if you get the chance to go to one of their hammerins GO!! be prepared for a great time, more knife making tips than you can possibly remember, more damascus created over the span of a couple of days than you would ever think possible! One reason is these guys never sleep! Seen the forge running till wee hours of the morning! maybe its the lack of sleep and the incredible talent the keeps these guys turning out those wild patterns, and the hospitality is second to none!

I also like the raindrop!

you guys have it all wrong..the real reason montana has so many damascus makers is cause they have to stay indoors 11 months out of the year and they need that fire to stay warm.

My favorites, Darrel Ralph,Jerry Fisk,Jerry Rados Turkish, and Keith Kilby. One of the best that has kinda dropped off thr radar is John M.Smith from Illinois.I have several Doug Casteel art pieces with John's steel and it is incredible. Also John Etzler is a real talent.

Actually the reason Montana has so many great makers (particularly Damascus) is they have been out in the woods too long & the mind starts doing strange things. Plus with all that fresh unpolluted air...... It's not surprising!

sharpdoc John is still around, I talked to him at the Mount Vernon Knife show. He was watching Chuck West table the first day. Chuck uses a lot of damascus.

I am voting for Conny Persson from Sweden. I had the pleasure of speaking to Zaza Revishvilli at the Chesapeake show yesterday and discovered three Persson pieces on his table. I have never seen such amazing precision in mosaic damascus. I bought a small blade made from many different patterns. Five patterns are arranged in 25 small blocks running down the center of the blade, flanked by a twist pattern along the spine and another pattern I can't name along the blade edge. Truly astonishing control over patterns. Very very tight distinct lines. I came home and read in January Blade Magazine that Mr Persson won Best Damascus at the Blade Show last year and received great compliments from Steve Schwarzer and Devin Thomas. I am proud and lucky to own a fine example of his skillful artistry in forged steel.

I also spoke with Robert Eggerling at the show and looked at his amazing work as well. Although I am not a knife maker (yet), I purchased several small pieces of mosaic damascus just use as paperweights and show friends what kind of Art can be produced in contrasting metals.

Yes, Persson's work is amazing. Steve Schwarzer's mosaic is also beautiful. My personal favorite is Wally Hayes of Ontario, Canada.
