Funny, timely topic. For years I liked Bic stick pens for EDC use and had a box of different Cross pens in my "Dress Pen" box. I eventually got tired of the smearing ink and sludgy response of the Bic pens and realized that while nice folks kept giving me Cross pens with cool Logos on them, they sucked as writing instruments.
I'm not a pen snob and I haven't got the bug yet for Ultra Premium pens, but I do have a preferance for an EDP (Every Day Pen). Ever since my first experience with roller-ball pens, I've been hooked. The few nicer pens that I carry these days (promo pens from vendors I represent) are all roller ball pens, but for the last few years what I've used in the home office and while at work are Uni-Ball Roller Deluxe pens. I always thought they were at the top of the diaposable pen list. I even took a little flak at work as the were a lot more expensive than the Bic disposables that I'd been using previously. They were worth every cent IMHO. The fine point lent clarity to my writings.
Today I found myself standing in Office Depot looking for another box of pens for personal use, which only happens every couple years. I found plenty of roller ball options, and even the Uni-Ball Roller pens in small and bulk packs, but could only find the Uni-Ball Roller Deluxe version in three packs and I wanted to buy at least a bulk pack so I wouldn't have to do this again for a few years. If I'd found the Deluxe Roller version in a bulk pack, my trip would have been done, but they were out of stock on that model. So I had to try out all the competition like the Pilot offerings. I ended up with a box of the newer Uni-Ball Roller Grip model with a .7mm tip and they seem to work quite well. They are comfortable to write with and while the .7mm tip is fatter than the .3mm tip on my old roller Deluxes, it actually seems to be more forgiving when writing. I couldn't warm up to the competition, or even the other versions of the Uni-Ball roller, the Roller Balll Grip seems to be the winner this time around for me.
There is a .5mm version of this pen called a Micro, but the .7mm Fine version seems to write really well.
Glad I'm not the only guy that thinks about this stuff.
