Favorite Energy Food Bars?

When I went to Philmont, I developed a love for Clif bars (any flavor, particularly oatmeal/raisin/walnut, chocolate chip, and the Builders Cookies & Cream) and the Larabar (cherry pie, pecan---tastes like pecan pie filling).

Clif also makes "energy shots" that are much like Jelly Bean's electrolyte-loaded sport beans.

And to the mentioning of Snickers, Snickers makes an excellent high-nutrition energy bar. My ex-girlfriend, who was a mate of mine on the track team (and we're still friends! :D) introduced me to them. Excellent in taste and nutritional composition.

Check out this web site for Shaklee meal and snack bars -www.shaklee.net/church. The meal bars are protein and the snack bars are for a quick pick me up. Great for your BOB, glove box and survival kit. Check it out.

I'll have to find out the brand but I bought these food ration bars a year ago... they're supposed to keep for 5 years and are apple cinimon flavored. One bar breaks into 9 small cubes and each cube is 400 calories. The 2400 calorie bar is about the size of a VHS cassette. The 3600 calorie bar is just about the size of a medium sized book.

My blood sugar crashes and I have to eat now. "Oatmeal To Go" bars are my favorite emergency energy bar.

i also am a big fan of the Nature Valley sweet and salty bars...i have eaten a box of those for breakfast after a cold night in the woods. good stuff.

Siguy is right! Get over to Costco and get yourself a couple of boxes of the Nature's Valley sweet and salty peanut bars. They sell for less than $12 a box and come in boxes of 48! You can't beat that deal. That works out to about 25 cents a bar. They're a really cheap alternative to Clif bars...and tasty too!

CLIFF and CLIFF Builder Bars get my vote to I usually carry some of each with me. In a true survival situation 1 standard CLIFF and 1 builder bar could sustain you for days.

I do a lot of backpacking at elevation, above 10,000'. When I go up that high, I lose my appetite, and many foods that I like at sea level where I live are hard to choke down. When I find things that I like at elevation, I'm happy.

My favorite bars are:

Lara - especially lemon
Balance - especially cookie dough
Nature Valley Roasted Nut Crunch Almond Crunch - it's essentially like peanut brittle, with almonds, peanuts, and sunflower seeds.

The only Clif bar I can stomach is Apricot, which I like a lot.

Additionally, something that is probably my favorite trail snack is the Hoody's Cinnamon Toasted Almonds. Wally world used to carry it, but now you have to order online.

Take my word for it; if you want to make it to my age and still run the hills like a healthy 20-year-old - ditch the store-bought energy bars and learn to build your own. It doesn't take much serious research to put your own energy bars together for something that will far surpass any commercial health/energy bar on the market in nutrition and caloric intake (if I can do it, anybody can). Your youthful body will only allow you to abuse it for so many years before it retaliates and informs you that it needs something purely healthy if it is going to continue operating at any efficient level. This comes from a guy who had an energy bar manufacturer as a sponsor years ago. Nope, I wouldn't eat those same bars today had I known more about nutrition. :) I don't think the occasional Snickers bar will kill ya, either (moderation can be a good thing). Want strictly calories for wintertime endurance? Do as some of my northern Inuit friends do; consume plenty of muktuk and seal oil. A full stick of butter can give you about the same but not as tasty in my experience.

I second the peanut butter jar concept. Delicious, nutritious, and versatile!

I'm another Cilff Bar(tm) fan and find them the best tasting of the various "energy bars".

One other thing to mention, is that Cliff Bars(tm) have another advantage over many other "energy bars" or regular candy bars... they hold up to hot weather better. A summer day in the pack in the south will turn a Snickers(tm) bar or many of the more "candy-bar-like" energy bars into an inedible mess, while a Cliff Bar(tm) will just be a little soft and sticky. ;)
