There are so many! It's hard to choose... Of course, that North Arm Skaha II is an easy choice. It's awesome! It has great action, solid lockup, decent ergonomics, and something I want to see on more modern folders: a thin (2.5mm) slicey blade. Here is mine with a titanium Convoy.
Below that is another easy choice, the Kizer Gemini by Ray Laconico. It's a contender for my favorite small-medium folder overall (similar EDC footprint to the Civivi Elementum.) There are a bunch of different versions from budget liner locks in Nitro-V or N690 to premium frame locks in S35VN. This one was a special edition.
I pretty regularly walk my little/fat & tubby/senior puppy-dog, on South Texas Farm & Ranch paths and "senderos", with my Cold Steel "Spetsnaz" shovel (*"E-tool") and my 20CV ZT-0308 "flippers"...
When I saw “flippers” I thought you were referring to Bali songs LOL. I don’t have any knives with the little hump on the back of the blade you use to swing the blade open but if you expand the meaning of flipper to mean a knife that can be opened using inertia my two favorites are the Yojimbo 1 and 2. The mass of the blade versus the tension of the screw is just right, enough tension to keep the blade in place and yet allow the knife to be flipped open with minimal effort.
This thread had me playing with various flippers last night. My love for the Gemini holds up. It's just so good for what it is. Reflecting on all the different versions, here are a few from this year's EDC pics.
(Note that I modified the one with carbon fiber over G10. Unlike most of the other ones, it came with crisp scale edges. So I rounded them over for enhanced ergonomics.)
Yes, that Raffir Noble glows in the dark. No, the pocket lint isn't stock.
I only have three. The first was a Spyderco Brad Southard that I bought back in 2013. Not long ago, I picked up a Kershaw Covalent. last spring, I found a dandy ProTech Mordax flipper. All of these do a fine job. I'm looking carefully at this thread and may pick up another good example of a flipper.
With mostly higher end or mid-grade stuff posted here, how about some true budget gems? These are a couple of my favorites from WE's budget brand, first the Sencut Snap and then the more compact Sencut Neches. The Snap runs 9Cr18Mov with an industry-leading heat treatment (roughly 440C level performance but very stainless). The Neches runs 10Cr15CoMov, which is a Chinese analog of VG-10. I've had a couple versions of both in rotation for a couple of years now and both punch above their grade. Both are discontinued now but if you look around, you can find them cheap.
I have five Hinderers. They're all good flippers, but this one with the bearings is by far the smoothest.
The ZT 0562 works well.
But the one that surprised me was this Laconico Keen from Mass drop a few years ago. The action's really slick, and it doesn't hog up a whole lot of space in the pocket.
