The S&W is manufactured in Taiwan by Taylor Brands. It is basically a slab of steel with a hawk edge and a spike ... no frills, and nothing fancy. The hawk blade comes to a nasty point at the bottom, which would facilitate hooking and grabbing, although there is no other sharpened edge besides the actual hawk blade. The spike looks to be impervious to any/everything ... it has no sharpened edges, so it's primarily designed for puncturing, breaking, or simply bashing through whatever it hits. The only negative I can report is that the four holes drilled to fix the rubber handle scales were slightly misaligned in the tang. This caused the grip scales to overhang by about 1/16". Not much, but enough to be uncomfortable to hold. I am replacing the rubber with paracord, and single/double hand gripping is much improved. I have not taken the S&W out yet and run it through the test course, but it feels and looks very durable and business oriented. It isn't a finesse axe by any means, and it will probably bludgeon more than chop, but the factory edge appears sharp enough to fell modest saplings and perform general fieldcraft chores. Weight is on par with what one would expect. Actually, it feels a tad lighter than my RD Hawk. I shopped around and found it for $65 delivered, so it's an excellent bang for the buck IMO. It would make a very cost effective breaching or truck tool, one that you wouldn't worry about scarring or damaging.
