I have watch many thousands of horror/science fiction movies, many of them more than once and the one has remained my favorite is the original Howard Hawks' version of The Thing From Another World (RKO 1951). It may have been a BW "B" movie, the special effects are dated and the cast was far from the best, but the story is very good and the director knew how to film it to produce something that was throuroughly entertaining. If I had to point at any one thing that makes this movie so great, it would be that story shows alot of respect for all of its characters including the monster. To borrow from Star Trek, there is no sense that the guy in the "security shirt" is doomed from the outset. Even the monster is killed with a certain amount of regret, a real cold war feeling that amounts to us vs. them rather than just hate or disgust. The several sequels to this film are closer to the short story which inspired the original film (Who Goes There, Carpenter 1938) and have far better budgets and special effects; but the later versions are much less interesting with lots of throwaway characters and a sloppy sneaky creature which is little more than a plot device. Like Peter Benchley Jaws, the original material was much improved by the script writers of the 1951 version.

In other words, a high body count is not required for good horror. This is something I wish most movie makers would learn. Perhaps they should take a few hours off to watch Howard Hawks version of The Thing, it's a real classy classic.

28 Days Later
Dawn of the Dead '04

Tales from the Crypt (1972)
The original Carrie
Suspiria
The Shining
'Salem's Lot, (mini series, I know, but scared the poop out of me as a kid)
Lost Boys
An American Werewolf in London
Creature from the Black Lagoon, (swimming in murky water still freaks me out)
The Blob, (both versions)
And many, many more...love horror movies :-)

I don't think its my favorite but I like the return of the living dead. Oh yeah Christine and IT.

That show "19 Kids and Counting" scares the daylights out of me!! :D

Seriously......

For some reason Misery with Cathy Bates really gave me the creeps.

Nightmare on Elm Street was a good one (the 1st one)

Jeepers Creepers was pretty good.

Hellraiser

Evil Dead 3. you can have the rest.

Still a great one. The 1922 Nosferatu. With all the great effects nowadays this one still shines

My favorites
Hills Have Eyes (craven)
Hills Have Eyes (aja)

If you have ever explored or camped in the high desert you'd understand why hills is pretty damn scary

If you haven't seen it already, some of you may want to see Wer (2013). An interesting movie about a defense attorney working with a client in France who has been accused of a brutal mass murder. It is a interesting and fresh take that breathes new life into an old and frequently done horror tale.

Thelma and Loiuse
When Harry Met Sally
and
ANY OTHER CHICK FLICK

Cause I hate them, but being single I'll tolerate them IFF I'm with a single female.

Now that is true HORRRRRRRRRRROORRRRRRRRR!!!:D

Lots of great ones mentioned that forgot to add. (Can't believe forgot Evil Dead's) Some i haven't heard of that i have to check out. Over the weekend watched Red Dragon(one of my favorite movies), Cat in the Brain( Not a great movie but maybe worth watching good weird stoner horror movie directed by Lucio Fulci. Like other films of his better. The Beyond, House by the Cemetary.) Texas Chainsaw 2,3 and The Beggining( all these movies are awesome, I remember watching TCM 3 as a kid and couldn't sleep well for months, all so damn insane, really like "Gunny" as the sheriff in The Beggining, played that part right and the whole movie is just perfect). The last Texas Chainsaw was terrible. Will post more as i watch/remember them. Would like to show a clip of "Gunny" Sheriff Hoyt but can't really find a scene that isn't over the top extreme.

not a fan of horror movies, so i haven't really seen any, but i did just start reading the shinning today

I don't know what it is, but I start shaking with fear when my girlfriend says we should watch... the notebook!

"Hunted" is perhaps the scariest movie I have ever seen. What I mean is, Benicio Del Toro trying to convince everyone he can speak English was horrifying.

The Tom Brown Tracker made up for most of the scary parts though.;)

Oh, is anyone gonna drop in some Becker content to legitimize the thread? Having this bumped to General would be horrifying as well.
