I'm not a huge fan of horror at least partly due to the wife not wanting to watch them. I suppose I go for the "soft core" horror...blended with another genre for good measure.
The Blob (original B/W)
The Andromeda Strain
Soylent Green
The Twilight Zone
Anything by Alfred Hitchcock
My mother was a huge Hitchcock fan, so I suppose I got that from her. All of these seem to be either a mix of horror with Sci Fi or murder/mystery...like I said, more subtle and nuanced as opposed to gratuitous. Maybe I'm just displaying my age...old school stuff was better written in my humble opinion.
