Hello all, I am in desperate need of some help and I’m REALLY hoping someone can assist me…. PLEASE!

Let me start by asking, do you have a favorite pocket knife? I do. How would you feel if it went missing? Not sure about you, but I feel like I’m not completely dressed leaving the house without it.

I have a number of Benchmade, Spiderco, Smith & Wesson, etc. pocket knives, but by far, my favorite pocket knife is one that I purchased at Daytona Beach Bike Week 8 or 9 years ago from one of the million vendors set up there. It’s most likely some Chinese made “cheapo”, but this knife is rugged and holds an edge like no other knife I’ve ever owned. This pocket knife first got my interest when I saw (or better yet DIDN’T see) the locking mechanism of the knife. The vendor suckered me in pretty well because he saw me eyeing the knife and he told me if I could get it open I could have it… free of charge. Challenge accepted. I fiddled with this dang knife for about 5 minutes and after deciding I had no idea what the trick was I handed it to him and said, “Show me, I’ll buy it”. He took it out of my hand and as fast as he could get his hands on it the blade sprang out to the open and locked position. I didn’t see him do anything fancy… for that matter I didn’t see him do anything at all. It was like the knife just opened. Then, just as easily as he opened it, he closed it. He then showed me the “trick” to opening it, I handed over $25 or something like that, and that has been my favorite pocket knife from that day forward. The dang thing was like a unicorn. It had a SS, non-serrated blade, and for as long as I’ve had it I’ve maybe had to refresh the edge two or three times. Like I said, I’ve got a LOT of pocket knives, most of them substantially more expensive than this one, but none hold a candle to this one. It is by far my favorite pocket knife I’ve ever owned…. Yesterday it went missing.

The knife is just a simple looking pocket knife, but the way it locks and opens is like no other knife I’ve ever seen, and I haven’t been able to find anything like it after searching the internet from one side to the other. On the handle, toward the butt of the knife, on one side there is a small oval machined into the handle which an allen head screw goes through. That screw and another screw at the blade pivot point are what hold the knife halves together. It is a spring assist knife, and the way it opens is you articulate butt of the knife halves near the butt of the knife where the machined oval slot is (the left side slides maybe 1/8” downward). That unlocks the blade and it springs to the open position. When you let the handle come back to rest the blade is open and locked. To unlock it you articulate the two sides of the knife toward the butt again, it unlocks, and you can fold the blade back in. This articulating motion is accomplished very simply and discreetly with the palm of your hand while holding onto the handle. I really don’t know how else to describe it.

I know that I’m not an artist, and unfortunately I don’t have any family pictures with it, but here is the best drawing I could come up with. If anyone has any idea where or how I could find a replacement I would be extremely grateful for your help. Thank you very much!

If the picture doesn't show please let me know how to post a picture. I'm not familiar with posting pics in the format required by this forum. Thank you.

I am curious to see this the picture isn't working for me but this is often the case at the office. It does sound like something I have seen somewhere online but I can't recall for certain.

I would like to see a picture, or know the name of it if anyone knows it. I would not mind trying one out. Sounds interesting.

I posted this on a lot of FB groups I belong to and it turns out the knife I have is a knockoff of this guy...

That's the Dalton Scale Release Automatic. My knife looks and functions EXACTLY like that one. Unfortunately those are $250+ and no longer sold, so that's out the window. I paid $25 for mine nearly a decade ago and it's still razor sharp and functions like a champ.

I know we're only two posts into this thread, but I'm EXTREMELY happy to say that my super badass wife scoured the house with a fresh set of eyes and found my knife. I feel like someone just called and told me they found my lost puppy!

One of the many reasons I love that knife so much is because of its unique locking/unlocking design. It's not easy to figure out, and once you do figure it out it takes a while to "master" it. I have a little boy (2 next month) and I keep all of my knives and guns locked up in my safe except for this one, since I carry it every day. If my son were to ever get his hands on it I'm 100% sure he wouldn't be able to hurt himself. He doesn't have the dexterity or hand strength required to open it.

It might seem trivial to some, but I don't know what I'd do if I truly lost it, never to be seen again. It's got me thinking I would like to buy another to have as a backup, but I can't seem to find one for sale anywhere, knockoff or namebrand. If anyone could help me find one I would be very grateful.

See my post above. Sorry, I didn't tag you guys so I wanted to make sure you got to see what I'm talking about

This one is similar in concept:

Nope - I bought it from a brick and mortar shop a good 5-6 yrs ago.
I'm not saying there are none available...just that I'm not going to do the searching.

I would imagine you won't get much help here buying a knockoff knife.

I thought I made it clear earlier, I don't care if it's name brand or knockoff, I'm looking for that particular type of knife. I'll buy a name brand no problem. I just don't know where to find it.

I'm not trying to make a value judgement, I'm just pointing out that suggesting a vendor who would sell a knockoff is 1) something many members would not do, and 2) something that may very well be in direct violation of this site's rules.

I'm just trying to give you a heads up on that.

Buy this.

Glad you found it, many times I've thought I lost mine and went nuts trying to find/replace

Thanks for the link. That one says "Bolster" lock. If everyone hasn't picked up on it yet, I'm not a knife expert, but it seems the type I'm looking for is referred to as a "Scale Release". Some people on my FB groups have posted up links to Scale Release knives for as little as $8. I'm not buying that crap. I call the one I have my unicorn because I never in my life would've thought a $25 knife would be as durable and last as long as this one has. With that said, if I'm going to buy another, I want the same quality and durability, so no hard feeling about paying more for it.

Is a Bolster and Scale Release the same thing?

Non supporting dealer links prohibited on BF- Please don't link to those that don't support BF.
We do have a list of supporting dealers with a range of varying products that you can purchase from.

First off, WELCOME!!! :)

Secondly, GREAT second post  Glad to read that you got your knife back so quickly and also that you appreciate your spouse (and she evidently likes you to since she bothered to call and let you know about it), so congratulations on that and also your son's upcoming birthday :) So many reasons to be thankful!

The locks can work via a similar mechanism depending on how each was designed, but the "bolster" is a separate piece of scale on the front portion of the handle.

Many of us know just what you mean. When I was younger, I had a cheap knife of surprising quality and durability that I carried everywhere and lost somewhere in the jungles of Oregon. I looked around for another like it, but none of the others versions were quite the same (i bought a couple and the quality was significantly inferior) so I moved on. Years later I learned that it was a copy of an Emerson design.

EDIT: Btw, your description of the action was excellent, thank you.

And again, welcome

NickPohlAandP - Welcome to the forums, and congrats on the second little one soon to arrive.

My "unicorn", as you call it, was a model made by Smith & Wesson in the early 1980's, that my dad had, and lost during a household move. Model #6062, stainless steel lockback, called the Maverick, with a 'Pull-the-Dot' sheath. I looked for one for years for my dad, then when I found it, not only did I find the drop-point model (like my dad's), I found the clip-point model with it, and got both.

I'm glad you found your knife. The knife you have will be available sooner or later on one of the many knife discussion forums, or on fleabay, or from an online vendor. A.G. Russell has a monthly catalog of pre-owned knives (Called The Cutting Edge), it may be worthwhile to subscribe, or read it online. I've seen many unique and oddball designs show up there - however, they won't be knockoffs or copies.

I ended up with a bunch of knockoffs when I started collecting knives about 13-14 years ago (and before I joined bladeforums), and the quality was hit or miss on all of them. Once I joined BF and started acquiring non-knockoff knives, the difference was obvious. I know you love the knife you have, but if you can find one of the originals, made by the original maker, you'll notice a big difference in quality, I'm sure.

Good luck -

~Chris

Thank you everyone for welcoming me. I agree with all of you saying that I'll appreciate the quality of a more expensive blade (except for Benchmade, had a bad experience after I purchased my Infidel and it left a sour taste in my mouth). I'd love to have a high quality version of my unicorn circus booth knife, I just don't know where to find it. I'm also a little hesitant to purchase one online for $300 unless I know that the seller would offer a money back guarantee. I'll know within the first 5 seconds of holding it whether it's what I want or not, but you have to have it to hold it. The two closest ones I've been able to find is one that looks EXACTLY like what I have for $50, so I'm guessing it's lacking in the quality department, and one that someone linked, I think it was a ProTec or something like that. It looks like it has the same action, but how will it feel? Ugh.
