Favorite lighters?

I'd agree that a lighter is not a good survival tool. Therefore, I carry the one I like the most, without regard to how well it does the job. Mines a zippo. And, btw, it does a good job. But to wander inot the woods with only one of anything necessary would be somewhere short of intelligent.
Here's an addition you could add to your keyring though, find a blacksmith and get a high carbon striker. With this you can get semi usable sparks from quartz, decent sparks from agate and petrified wood, and insane sparks from flint. Works much better than most modern knives.

Stryver

Stryver, Sounds good at first, but wouldn't it rust in a sweaty pocket, unless coated with something.

Besides, I always have a metal match on my keyring. Almost anything can scrape sparks off of that.

As far as just having some fun with it though might be good, and I have seen them for sale. I probably saw it at some "primitive" type site, or in an issue of Backwoodsman. How would you compare a file for effectiveness? It certainly can be obtained easily and for relatively little money. I don't think I'm going to run out and try the edge of one my cast iron skillets...has anyone ever tried this.

I just wish I had some natural pieces of flint too fool around with.

I carry SEVERAL methods as I never rely on ONE of anything.

I have a ZIPPO that was my mother's (she smoked).

I have a few disposables around as well.

I have Mag FS's I really like.

I have strike on box matches in the boxes.

Strike anywhere matches in 35mm film cases. These are found in small shops, convenience stores and whatnot, usually. The reason you don't see them is the SHIPPING, I have been told. The are almost considered an EXPLOSIVE and they are seen as dangerous to ship accordingly.

I keep one or two methods everywhere, in kits, in pockets, in the vehicles and laying around in drawers. You never know when you need a light!
