Favorite Lock Type Poll

What is your favorite lock type on a folding knife?

  • Back lock

  • Top lock (ex. A.G. Russell K-31)

  • Liner lock

  • Compression lock

  • Axis lock (or similar)

  • Slipjoint (no lock)

  • Button lock

  • Other

  • Frame lock

Results are only viewable after voting.
Framelock closely followed by liner and compression locks. Feel the most natural to me.

I do think the liner lock feels the most natural. In fact, if there were liner locks out there that were a little thicker than normal, and otherwise done the way they are on the Resilience and Tenacious, then I would probably prefer those. Not a frame lock though, because I have found find they are a pain to disengage either handed, due to where my hand naturally braces against the lock side scale. In other words, my closing technique makes it so I can't close a R.I.L. knife.

shooting down false information is sort of what we do here. The constant shameless promotion of the triad lock as the best thing ever is tiresome, not factual

That I and others like the Triad lock best is a subjective valuation. That we consider it a different lock from the back lock on account of its added engineering features is a judgment of facts. I don't think stating that one has a preference for the "back-lock-plus" we know as the Triad lock amounts to shameless promotion, or false information.

and off topic.

The poll called for favorite lock type, and included a category for "other", and you'd be hard pressed to logically frame an argument against the Triad lock appearing in said poll category.

no vote for the triad lock is even possible in this poll.

Isn't possible, yet I and others have voted for the Triad lock, evidently breaking the fabric of reality in the process.

We're that powerful, because our folding knives are as strong as fixed blade knives (okay I am legit trolling with that last sentence!).

Did a triad lock steal someone’s girlfriend in high school or am I missing something here?

Ah, if you think that is what I said then I would invite you to reread my posts....

You know this isn't the proper place for that.

Plus, all I see are a bunch of back lock and "other" votes. ;):p:D

Certain favorite son , quality members have special preference here in BF . I've been burned and have learned . Can't fight city hall !:thumbsdown::thumbsdown:

Members can hopefully judge for themselves . o_O
What are you on about now?

Cold Steel Triad (improved back lock ) has some QC issues in some models but is overall the strongest and most reliable lock on the market , IMO .:thumbsup::thumbsup:
I have found it to be just as reliable as other back locks....that is, in the examples I've had that worked properly without modding. Not my opinion, my experience :cool:;);):cool::cool::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:;);):)

You appeared to draw a correlation between your "First" and "Second". But you say that was not so; I apologize for misreading you.

It wasn't that kind of trolling!

Touché, eh.

Personally, I don't really have a favorite lock type. I carry everything from slip joints to fixed blades. I've never had a well made lock of any type fail on me. (Nor have I had a slip joint accidentally close during use, for that matter.) And that's all I really care about. IMO, lock strength is an overrated, over-argued property. For me the only thing I care about is that the lock does not accidently disengage. Reliability, rather than strength, is what I am after, and I can get that from any style of lock. YMMV.

Agreed.

I get that different locks can have different properties though. While strength isn't something that I'm all that concerned about, if other folks are, have at it! Stab those meat boots and throw that stabinator 3000 at sentries to your hearts content!

One lock property I am concerned about that others may not be is closing detent. For certain activities I regularly engage, having a strong closing detent bias is an important concern to me. I want that blade staying in the handle even under extreme jostling conditions (EJC :D). I love the axis lock but I don't feel safe carrying it when engaging in activities that might shake the blade out when I'm not able to clip the knife so the blade spine is against a pocket seam. With most back locks, and the Seki Japan Spydercos specifically, I have no fear of this.

So not something that is important to everyone else but it sure is to me, and one of the reasons I chose the back lock in this poll!

I like Triad locks the best. I had to return one to the dealer because the lock could not be disengaged without compressing it against the edge of a table. Hard. Some of the rest require good hand strength for one handed closing. That usually gets better with use.
I ve always liked Spyderco lock backs but they develop back and forth blade play more often than I wh for one handed closing. Does it hurt the function of the knife in use. Not that I can tell, but I don t like it when a quality folder doesn't t lock up tight.
My overall favorite, besides the Triad, is the compression lock. Great design.

I've owned dozens of lock back Spydies over the years and have never had a problem with lateral blade play.

Some members are all upset that I didn't make a separate option for Tri-Ad Lock. (It's a type of back lock, guys!)

But this one goes to eleven...

I have a Benchmade version of Emerson's CQC-7 that is the absolute smoothest opener and closer I have. It also has a very weak detent. It's the only knife I've cut and stabbed myself with whilst rooting around in my pocket because it had popped partially open. So that and lock-stick and my inability to sharpen the chisel grind back to razor sharpness are a few reasons I don't carry it much.
