Favorite makers you'll never get...

Thanks STeven. I see I disappointed you... :D You're so flushed, you even forgot to capitalize the "T" in your name.

Scott Slobodian- Always beautiful and functional.
Howard Clark- L6 Katana, oh yes.
Bill Bagwell- Bowies, bowies and more bowies.
Don Hanson- Very nice blades whether folder or fixed.

Most of the biggest names have been mentioned: Walker, Loveless, Moran are all in the upper regions.

Appleton (Ron is still producing and will continue)
Loerchner (every once in a while an aftermarket piece is available.)
HH Frank (Simply exquisite engraving and traditional folder designs)
Jack Levin (Out of this world ideas and machining/artistry skills)

Approachable pieces but still usually just out of my reach:

Fogg
Carter
Imel
Dailey
Herman
Hudson
Fisk

I owned an engraved Levin piece and traded it for an upcoming Hill Pearce Bowie. For me, well worth it.

I get to 'own' these magnificent pieces for many days at a time. If you get enough chances to lick a lolipop, you don't need to buy a candy bar...... ;)

Well, I'd have to go with Moran, Loveless, and Yoshihara.

Thankfully, I've got some nice blade from H.J. Schneider and Warenski, so I know I won't be totally out of luck on the greats. I really need a Tim Hancock or Steven Rapp though.

Also on the list would have to be Van Barnett and Delana.

My interest in knives began to develop as a kid when I read a magazine over and over for a week while I was sick in bed. There was an article on William Scagel that detailed his work during WW II and since that time I've always wanted one of his knives from that era.

I'd have to go with Yoshihara as my pick for an active smith. As much as I'd love one, even in rough polish, I can't imagine being able to afford one any time soon. And yes, if I owned them, I'd use both blades...;)

Tomoyuki Nemoto. If I sold my entire collection, I might, maybe, be able to afford one of his axes. Don't think it'll ever happen. :(

Phil Hartsfield tops my list.

Kemal, but only because they seem to sell out before I even know about it.

Bill Moran bowie - saw one in NY that knocked my socks off
Bob Loveless fighter

Many Japanese smiths:
A few of which are
Fujiyasu Masahira
Matsuda Tsuguyasu
Watanabe Shigehira

Ron Lake. I'd have to sell too many knives I love to buy one.
Moran, way out of my league.
Any of the traditional Japanese smiths' katana, same reason.

Holy sheeit, let me add Jurgen Steinau to the list. If his prices start at 4500, where do they start for folders?

Pretty much all customs are out of my "comfort zone" right now. I collect knives, but I use them hard. ( I take good care of them) I can't see myself batonning with a knife I paid more than about $150.00 for. I probably wouldn't even use a Busse because of price, much less a super hooyah, work of art $1000.00 + blade. Maybe some day I will start collecting knives as art instead of practical tools. (of course my 40 odd knives are probably a little much for just users lol. I know that is a drop in the bucket compared to many people on here, but I use each and every one of them during the course of a year's camping, hiking, fishing, and general craziness.

You wouldn't use a $150 knife? What do you figure the 40 knives that you do use are worth, collectively? There's a lot of joy in using a fine custom. It doesn't have to come anywhere remotely near $1,000 either.

As for the topic of the thread... I never say never. :o

But....

I really like the look of Ed Fowler's big bowies, but they are few and far between and priced waaaaaay out of my range.

I positively LOVE Don Fogg's bowies and integrals. They carry a premium tag and are worth it. But they, too, are on the cusp of being out of reach for me.
