I have "The Bug out Bag" that is advertised to hold 3,280 cubic inches, would like something smaller and hoped some of you might point me in the right direction.

The Maxpedition Falcon II (1520) and the pygmy (1400) look pricey and mighty small for a backpack.

The spec ops the Pack advertises 2,550 ci, but the dimensions are larger than the BOB

Appreciate any input

i have used eagle, camelbak, and lately kifaru. i really like the kifaru packs the best because they are well thought out and the most durable. they are pricey compared to most but if you want the best you have to pay for it unfortunately.

If "bomb proof" is not a necessity, just decent quality, some I know of:

REI Lookout (own it): http://www.rei.com/product/747524. ~2400 cu in. Nice fit for me

Kelty Redwing 2650 (almost bought the 3100): http://www.rei.com/product/734324. The medium should be the 2650, the large should be 3100. Look around, I usually see this for as low as $70.

Kelty MAP (want it):http://www.amronintl.com/tactical/products.cfm?id=631. This site always has the best non-ebay prices I see. Disregard the 3500 cu in in the description. It is 1950 cu in. Knew a couple of SEALs that have this. Like it for a carry around bag, good size for what you are looking for.

REI Traverse (used to own it): http://www.rei.com/product/747525. I am a Scout leader and have three small kids. I needed more room so moved up to the Lookout. Decent pack, it could pinch a bit around the neck if I weighed it down much.

Lots more out there by North Face, Jansport, Piper Gear, Camelbak, etc. You really need to think about what you want to use it for, how you want it to look (tacti-Cool, commercial, etc) and just start trying them on. I love REI to do that, but you can find better prices at times on line, or at spots like Sportsmans Warehouse.

Hope this helped.

Take a look at the L.L.Bean Rucksack. I use 3 of them as our car BOBs. Great price, quality and versatiity. Very low profile in grey, in the event you have to walk out.
I had a shoemaker sew on small
fastex lash points to the bottom of each ski pocket and two larger ones to the bag bottom, to which I added 24" long, 3/4" wide lash straps with plastic buckles. I also added two slip-on nylon pockets to the waist belt and a yoke pocket to shoulder strap. The pockets are inexpensive ones from BQ.

The extra ski pocket lash points allow you to cover and tie down a shovel, large knife, etc. The bottom lash points allow you to add a sleeping mat/bag or a stuff sack with extra clothes, etc. The small yoke/ belt pockets are for equipment you might need quickly.

All-up cost was less than $100.

The Kifaru Scout intriques me, but honestly, I have a Pygmy Falcon from Maxpedition and the only thing the Scout has, as far as I can see, over it is the fact you can take the shoulder straps off of it.

Am I missing something?

I like my Maxpedition Vulture II.

I'm close to buying this one, but there's nowhere I can try it out first.

How does it ride? Does it (the back) feel floppy, or fairly stiff, or does it depend entirely on how it is packed?

Does the waist belt transfer load to the hips (like on my big Berghaus sack) or is it just to aid stability?

I'm used to rucksacks with internal frames. I've never owned one without, so I'm a bit concerned about the support or lack of with the Vulture.

It looks closest to what I'm after. I want one that fits comfortably and firmly in case I need to move quick/cover rough ground etc.

Cheers,
Rick.

No Don, not really. I like the fact that I don't have to keep a belt on it, and I like the way it hangs and fits my back a bit better. I like Maxped gear as well, but I had some gift $ burning a hole in my REI pack, so decided to go for it. As far as value, I think it is worth the $, if you have it.

i have a camelbak hawg.

the mole attachments come in handy when needing to strap on more gear.

I just ordered one of these. Price was right and size was right. I really like Maxpeditions stuff but I thought I would see how one of these holds up. I have never ordered any Spec Ops stuff. I'll let you know what I think when I get a chance to look it over. I should get it around Thursday. I only paid for ground shipping when I ordered it Thursday last week. :(

Spec Ops T.H.E. Pack

Thank you KR!

that is exactly the deal that tempted me.

I have searched and searched and am thinking that 1800- 2200 cubic inches might be the ticket.

Visited St. Louis this weekend with my big BOB, and decided that 2,500 would be my absolute urban limit

MMIAM,

Hey, that's cool. I think a lot of these companies are making dynamite products. I also think that sometimes you have to pay for what you really want because it fits you better. That's no slap on any company, some things just feel better than others, etc., etc., etc...

I love Maxpedition products but I don't rule out other things I might need as well. I have one piece of gear from Spec Ops and I am sure you will be pleased with the construction and design as long as you ordered what you wanted after a careful decision.

I have one of their BDU pocket organizers and it's really an awesome piece of gear.

have had several Maxpedition, REI, Condor and other packs... I've even had a local outdoor gear repair gal add ladder straps to several older Mountain Smith packs...

Then I saw the KIFARU XRay, a new model, medium sized day bag... I went for it...

And can't be happier! :thumbup::D

http://www.kifaru.net/MGXray.htm

I use it as my daily carry bag, with enough stuff to get home in an emergency, and then can dump more in it and bug out if I need to. The OMNI belt, carried over from the original MtnSmith line adds a level of carrying ability and STABILITY that is unbelievable! Not to mention, it can accept MOLLE/PALS puches from any other manufacturer out there to really help out w/accesorizing. Also, I ride a bicycle, so I had to take into consideration how high it rides on the back - too high and it interferes with the back of the bike helmet - this one allows the bag to ride high or low... Multi purpose as far as I'm concerned!

Pricey, but I feel it'll be the last bag of this size I'll buy... Now, I just have to sell of a half dozen of my older ones to free up space in my wee old apartment! :D

I had a cmaelbak motherlode for year. I liked it so much I picked up a BFM. I think its a great pack esp for the money. Only pack I'veseen that I lie as much would be a blackhawk raptor.

Kr- how do you like the spec ops pack?

Its well worth the price. Its just a sack though. No frame, which you probably know. Very well built. If you have any specific questions I'll try to answer.
