I think tip strength is very important. Most knives even from the most popular makers and manufacturers fail at this crucial area.
The drop point is usually a good compromise between piercing ability and strength if they don't overharden the steel and make it brittle anyway.
A knife for the most part should be able to take a little lateral bending even in this area.If it can't then in general it was hardened to much.

Depends on what the knife is used for. I like a thin point on pocket knives and I'm usually not concerned with tip strength. It's true that a drop point is a good compromise with tip strength, and a good versatile design overall. Of course, if you want a knife with a really strong tip, you can get a knife that has no tip!

Drop point and spearpoint are great. Clip point is good. Geometric tanto vary... chisel ground ones look really weird, sharpen really weird, and cut really weird.

I really like clips, and spearpoints with swedges. I used to like tantos, but I'm really sick of them, and I don't like how they seem to detract from the useful edge of the blade.

Humm, for me it is the sheepfoot and the warnecliff blade points. Really great for almost any kind of work. I especially like them when the maker incorporate a little curve to the blade like Terzoula does.
