Favorite production folder?!

the spyderco chinook 1 was a real beast of a knife. one of the best spyderco ever made in my opinion. the chinook 2 and 3 are pretty great too, though all these models are now discontinued.

I go back and forth between "favorites". At the moment it's the ZT0550 but I have an 0801 coming in today which I hope can steal some of that enthousiasm.

PM2. IMO almost perfect out of the box. Most other productions I've felt the need to modify in some way, not the PM2.

First would be my Spyderco Southard. Here this week though, I've been moving my business to a new location, including our machine shop, so there's been a lot of disassembly and heavy packing/packaging and I've been using my BM 810 all week. That knife is a machine!

Granted I haven't tried a lot of knives and I certainly can't afford to, but I'm happy with my PM2. I don't feel the need to buy another modern folder.

I used to swear by my southard that replaced my zt0560 but now they have been thrown to the curb by my hinderer xm-18 wharncliffe it fits in the hand like no other. I had to tighten the detent but now it flips as good as my southard. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1400846896.062896.jpg

Dang forgot about the AFCK, best Benchmade ever. Gave mine away about 10 years ago. Always missed it, but my buddy still has it and its running strong. My fav though is the Bradley alias 1. Had one for years and sold it to a bro. Thought I had plenty knives... striders, crk's, a hinderer and I just always missed that knife. Found a user on here on BF and scooped it up a bit ago and it hasn't left my pocket (sorry other knives). I actually just blasted, tumbled and anodized it this afternoon and its all fresh. I have been enjoying the 801, and just got the BWCF one in the mail today. It actually flips with even more authority than the standard, which i didn't expect. The Bradley is somehow as smooth and fast as anything on bearings I've owned with just the use of phosphor bronze washers.

Is it just the lighting, or is the PVD finish on the 0801CF wearing in spots?

My favorite would be the Benchmade Rift, with the ZT0801 running a close second. If I had managed to get my hands on a 0801CF, that could have been reversed.

Out of all my Knives ~~ I love & carry 1 of my my Delica ZDP189's & 1 of my many Para2's more than any other Knives & if left alone I will be very happy with those 2..!! TYVM

I have owned most of the popular productions. From Spyderco, ZT, CRK, Benchmade etc. Although each of them were great in their own right (with a couple of duds thrown in), I have ended up with these two:

I honestly have very little desire for anything else other than more Hinderers.

My favorite modern knife is the Buck Vantage Pro. Not because it's the best knife available (I own several that are better) but because it's the one modern knife I own that most often does what I need to do, is easy to carry and doesn't cost so much that it would hurt to lose it or break it. My favorite traditional folder is not a knife brand but a type. A 3 7/8" stockman pattern. I own a dozen or more of these knives and I always carry one--right now a Moore Maker 5301.

It's supposed to look like that. ZT released the normal PVD CF version and a
brown-wash version which is the one you see in the picture!

New to the forum and rekindled my interest in folders for EDC/CC duty. Started with an older Microtech Mini Socom, Ontario Utilitac ll, BM 940-1, Spyderco SB Delica4, but my favorite so far is my Spyderco PM2.

Now days almost all the big companies are making great production knives....I think it comes down to which knife fits the individual's taste and ergos.

I carry Benchmade, Spyderco, Strider, Chris Reeve, ZT/Kershaw........

You don't need a high dollar flavor of the week knife to carry a great knife these days.

Seriously I think some of the collaboration knives are better than the originals of course thats (JMO)...

Great post.

I agree with all that I quoted above. I have some "more premium" knives that I tend not to carry very often just because of the ergos and ease of use. This is exactly why the Manix that I mentioned above is my favored EDC. It is light weight, inexpensive (if I lose it or ruin it somehow, no biggie), but yet has truly premium steel for the blade (S110V). Not the fanciest, the prettiest or the most expensive, but man it does the job and I love carrying it. Like I said above - perfect EDC for me.

As far as collaborations, in many cases I agree. I own 3 of the Ikoma collabs with CRKT and, after handling the original of the fossil, I'm just not sure why I would want to spend the extra money. Better steel? Yes. Better built? No. But like the Manix, I slip that one in my pocket and go without a worry. I also have a Brian Tighe Nirk Tighe and the collaboration from CRKT. The custom is prettier in a lot of ways and the steel is superior. But even with the Ti frame on the custom, the weight is not much different and both work equally well. I carry and use the CRKT but the custom is mostly relegated to the safe.

Finally I had an Emerson CQC-7 and, for reasons that I won't go into here, didn't much care for the knife. Gave it to #2 son (who loves it). But I am looking forward to getting one or more of the Kershaw collaborations when they become available.

JMO. :)

These two are probably my most favourite production folders. If I could only have one, I'd pick the Pioneer. It can do more than my Sebenza. Thankfully, I don't need to choose one or the other; I'm lucky enough to own both... :)
