Favorite SAK?

Victorinox Huntsman and Wenger Soldier (with the large shackle) and want to get a Victorinox Farmer (like the soldier plus saw).

Edited to correct model name (should be Huntsman, not Hunter).

My favorite is probably my Swisschamp because my wife got it for me as a gift. I also enjoy my Rucksack and Huntsman. It's hard to go wrong with an SAK.

Soldier, but I wish it had a cork screw..

UnknownVT, have you ever tried to start a fire with your magnifying glass using the sun?

But my favorite SAK like knife is the Aitor Gran Capitan.. Has everyting you'll ever need and its a little beefier.

Cheers.

V-nox Pioneer...2 blade model is my daily carry. Others on the list are:
Pioneer/saw & small hawkbill blade
Soldier
Electrician
Hiker
Compact
Rucksack
Classic

I've tried but not "in anger" as if you will,
but merely to try it out - on a piece of paper - it certainly smoked and scorched the paper burning a hole in it......

My favorites are:

Tinker
Pioneer (single blade)
Pioneer (saw and pruning blade)
Electrician
FieldMaster (like Tinker plus saw and scissors)

Swiss Champ (has all but the kitchen sink)
Super Tinker (very handy edc)
Soldier (tough at boots)
Jelly Midnight Manager (perfect for keychain)

My favorite would have to be the Tinker model. I picked up a couple of the Economy Tinkers from Lowes last year. They have the textured handles. Also, the main screwdriver blade has a notch that mates with a hook on the corresponding spring to make it much tougher to close. I have never seen that feature on any other Victorinox.

My favorite by far is my black handled "Climber." I have to say that fo all my knives this by far is used the most. I think the metal used is very good and holds an edge well.

I don't understand though why Victorinox seems to offer other models available only over seas? I am interested in the Pioneer line particularly this model:

The only place I can find it is overseas at http://www.swiss-knife.com. Not even on their website! Any idea why?

UnknownVT, where did you get that "Scientist" and how/who customized it? Is it hard to install new handles? Just curious.

Mustang,

The model that you showed in the picture is sold as the Soldier in the U.S. You can find them at some online knife retailers. Also, Target was selling them last month in their stores, but they do not seem to stock them regularly.

A Classic is always on my keyring and for the pocket, usually a Super Tinker or sometimes a Huntsman for outdoor considerations.

The Pioneer has a keyring. The Soldier doesn't. Otherwise I think they're the same knife.

My Victorinox Scientist was bought circa 1982 when they were still imported by Forschners as they were known then - now Swiss Army Brands.

Victorinox make many models of the SAK and not every country imports every model.

However Victorinox at one time had a store in the Stamford, CT, Town Center Mall - run by Paul Elsener - son of the current owner of Victorinox - and he could get any current model made.

I can't seem to find the store in the current yellow pages - but have found two other close locations - that might well be related:

Victorinox Stores Inc
(914) 428-8473
125 Westchester Ave
White Plains, NY

Victorinox Stores Inc
(860) 521-1806
Westfarms Mall
Farmington, CT

As for the customizing - I had a number of Victorinox SAKs done by K.J. Lewis of South Carolina - but he no longer does this customization. He was featured in Ken Warner's annual Knives 'xx books. I convinced him that he needed to be able to inlet the handle tools - so he managed with my Scientist - his first ever.

At one time there was another person who customized handles - part time - and had a web site too - but I can't recall his name or find the web site.

Victorinox used to offer special handles including real Stag and wood - I've seen them in store overseas like Hong Kong, probably a good bet is to contact Victorinox direct either via the US stores or Switzerland and ask about special handles.

Standard handles are held on by hidden rivet heads - so one can remove the handles by inserting a thin flat blade between the scale and the aluminum liner the simply pry them off - to fit a regular replacement handle is to simply match up the holes with the rivet heads and firmly press the handles into place.... so I've been told
:D :D :p

My customized handles are epoxied into place - so they are as permanent as one can get.

Thanks UnknownVT. I appreciate it. Very Intereting.....

Thanks Tardis also, I see the Soldier around also but I thought the keyring is a nice feature eventhough I really never use teh one on my SAK. It just looks naked without it. LOL
