I voted for VG-10. I really like my ZDP Caly 3, but I haven't had to give it a serious sharpening yet.

I honestly don't have a preference...I just like steel period, and have knives made from just about every older and modern steel, including all the stainless steels on your list except for BG-42 along with several other steels that are not on your list. ;)

Two of the four knives I alternate-EDC are Kershaw's old enough to be made with 440A, not even on your list, and apparently now disdained although once in widespread use...I like it just fine. My other two alternate-EDCs are VG-10 and ZDP-189. :D

I voted Other...

Ray :)

All the knives I have right now seem to be 440C, so I voted for that. Up until a couple days ago, I didn't know anything about steel.

From what I've read, I'd probably consider S30V or VG-10.

I also like D2.The D2 on my BM710 is exceptional in all the catagories mentioned, but it's not stainless,so wouldn't fit in this poll.

Ah, tell me what that knife is like! That's the exact one I've been considering.

Hard choice for me. The actual models of knives I love the most are not made in the steels I love the most. I voted AUS-8 because this is my favorite steel that the greatest number of my favorite knife models are made with.

I have a great deal of respect for the following steels: H-1, Sv30, 440c, 154/34, and vg-10. I do not currently own any knives with these steels, although I trust them completely.

S60V. Never had trouble sharpening it and has had great edge holding for me. Haven't tried out S90V but I'm sure I'd like it.

I'm a fan of D-2, and the edge it'll take seems more a function of the owners patience than otherwise.. hard to sharpen but who CARES when you can make it split a hair 4 ways?

well.. i suppose it'd matter if you weren't a very patient person.

i have to get some of that CPM D-2 and test it out.. and the AUS-8 might be closer than I thought..

But the only problem I've seen with D-2 is folks trying to hurry it sharp. That doesn't work well. Bring your lunch. .

D2 is close enough to stainless for ME.. no matter technically it's not quite...

IMO,It's the best knife for the $$ made by Benchmade(with the Griptilian at a close second). The recurve isn't as extreme as some knives out there. The blade/handle ratio & balance are perfect. The action is smooth as silk.Eventually I want to get one in M2.I just don't have the $400-$500 to plunk down on a blade right now.
Sure you could buy more expensive BM's like the 930,940 or 630 for instance, but if you like BM's the 710 is a must for your collection:thumbup:
You can find one at $100 or less most of the time.
Go get you one:)

BTW, Can anyone

answer my questions about BG-42 in post#19??Without inserting a link on it's properties.I've read quite a few.I'm looking for side by side comparison.Appreciate any info. Thanks:)

CL01,
I've heard nothing but good things about BG-42,since I've been on these forums.I've yet to get a blade with it.I really want to get one with it,just to see what it's all about.
How would it compare to S30V or 154CM(which are very close in my opinion & experience),as far as edge retention, ease of sharpening & corrosion resistance goes?Is it much of a noticeable difference?Do you think it would be worth it to me to buy a blade with BG-42,just to satisfy my curiosity?

Sorry if I'm being a pain in the ass,but can anyone provide me with an answer about this, through side to side comparison? Not a link on it's properties.I've already read all there is to read on the subject.Looking for a hands on comparison.

Wow! It seems S30V & VG-10 are running neck & neck:)

Usually S30V sweeps all the rest in these polls;)

S60V/440V, S30V, (D2, M2,) VG-10, VG-1/AUS8A, 440C, 154CM/ATS34

All have their blade place, anything but the softer 420/440A-B & Chinese stuff..

So I guess I'd go "other".

:thumbup:I hear that about the 440V.I wanted to get a Boa with the 440V,but the recurve kind of turned me off,due to sharpening issues.
I may still get one anyway:)

I had on in CE in S30V,but sold it.I not a big fan of serrations

I'm not trying to nit-pick here, but when I put other,I meant other stainless steels.I realize a lot of people love their carbon steels, but this is a stainless thread

Speacking of Us knifes production I own a recent 154 Benchmade, an Ats34 Sog, a first '90 San Mai Cold Steel, a 4xx mid '80 Pioneer's Buck, some Leatherman with steeel not marked but supposed to be s30. But sofar in my pocket there is the "poor" version of Spyderco D-fly in Aus-8. Why? Simply because it seems me taht it takes the edges and cuts like the knifes wich I am use to: handcrafted italian knifes with the blades hammer forged on fire and not stainless at all. I like it. its is also very easu to resharpen.

13C26/AEB-L Whether it's superkillacool from Kershaw or uberedge-taking from Larrin Thomas, it's my favorite stainless steel.

I would go with S30V (my native) or VG 10 (delica 4) and it seems the people agree. Both are great for edc and are a plesure to use and sharpen

I am quite partial to S30V. I have NEVER had any issue with the S30V blades on my customs chipping.

D2 with 11.00-13.00 Chromium for all practical purposes is Stainless.
I don't understand the sharpening issues with it here.
Another urban myth along with S30V chipping..
D2 keeps working while the rest head for benchstones.

440V(S60V) is also outstandinding in edge retention.
I have a 1580 Boa (assist spring removed) which is a great field knife,
and easy to sharpen.

For any serious work I grab my 806D2, 710D2 or 1580440V, I don't split
hairs or shave arm hair (for fear of taking my hand off)..

For light work EDC I prefer the 943, 154CM is way under-rated IMHO.

I've never had a serious knife cut either.. yet. (knock on wood).
