Favorite steel and why

Wootz, because it looks cool, it's tough, and quite rare. Here is a macro from a folder I own, by Achim Wirtz.

Stainless: SPGS (Fallkniven), VG-10, S30V, S60V (440V), ATS-55, in that order. SPGS (used for instance in the U2) is quite incredible, doesn't seem to lose its edge at all. Of the others VG-10 takes the best edge and is easy to sharpen. I really like that stuff in folders.

Non stainless: 1095, 52100. I haven't got much experience non stainless steels, rediscovered them only recently after using only stainless steels for a *long* time. But from what I've seen so far I reckon even an old-fashioned steel like 1095 beats the stainless steels in every single compartment other then corrosion resistence.

So much for the advantages of high-tech steels.
