  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. I pray that this nation does not forget the loss of lives from this horrible event. Yesterday conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was murdered, and I worry about what is to come. Please love one another and your family in these trying times - Spark

Favorite Steel

Does Spyderco or Kershaw/ZT make anything in the 154CM??

ZT 0200 uses 154CM. Some of the limited-run Blurs (eg. the 1670CF154, and the spider-web Blurs) and early runs of the Spec Bump use CPM-154. There are probably others, but those are the ones that come to mind.

Depends on what Im using it for. VG10 for cooking, 440c or a good all arounder, M390 when I want to impress myself and D2 when I need it to be tough.

I just like hard steels over 62 hrc and preferably carbon.

If I had to pick one steel for all my knives for the rest of my life I'd pick Swedish steel or Japanese white steel.

Slipjoints- 1095
Folders- M390, PD1, CPM154
Fixed- 1095, I have infi but haven't used it enough yet.
Machete- 1095, L6 or whatever Svord uses

s30v, m4, and also really liking cruwear. and damascus cause it looks so darn cool

There has been few steels Ive never even heard of poping up!!!! thats good ive been trying to research what i dont know. Im suprised ZDP-189 is being listed more than it has, seems spyderco makes a few blades in this that seemed very popular.

Definitely M390/CTS-204P. I can get it stupid sharp, it'll stay stupid sharp and it can take some punishment.

I'm a big fan of 154CM/ATS-34 and VG-10 once I'm outside the realm of premium/super steels. They're just such great steel for almost any task.

What knives are made with the 154CM that keeps coming up???

154CM is Benchmade's current basic steel choice, Emerson uses it in everything and I believe Hogue uses it pretty regularly too. Plus numerous others I'm sure.

My favorites:
CPM-D2 & M4
1095
ZDP-189 (NON-laminated)
S30V
154CM
O-1

In no particular order, and each prefered for certain applications:

CPM 3V
INFI
SR101 (52-100)
Elmax

Second to all of those:

5160
1095
A2
O1

My most carried/used steel is ZDP189 because its in the Stretch and the Endura, some of my very favorite users... I get a laser edge that stays that way for months with just stropping.

Other faves:
CPM-S90v/CTS-20CP
CPM154
M4
CTS-204P

Limited experience/Looking forward to more:
K390, K294, M390
S110v

Here is my top 10 - in order...most are stainless. I lumped a few steels together that are basically the same thing. M390 is my fav.

M390 / CTS204P
S90V / CTS20CP / add S110V (not much difference between S90v S110V)
CPM 154 (powered version of 154CM)
Elmax
CPM M4
S35VN / S30V / CTS BD30P
ZDP 189
154CM / ATS34 / BG42
VG10
AUS8

Strider of course used CPM154, you can find a few Bucks that use it (including a Buck 110 that comes in this steel).

s30v, m4, and also really liking cruwear. and damascus cause it looks so darn cool

I would have put Cru-Ware on my list but not enough knives come in it. I have a preorder from August for 3 Millies in this steel, maybe one day I will get them.
