Favorite thing about an opinel. Other than being ridiculously sharp.

Is it wrong that I still want a #9, and #10?....

;)

It would be wrong if you didn't. :D I carry a carbon #10 every night for breaking down boxes at work. While most people seem to find the #8 ideal, I prefer the #10. The #12 is actually my favorite, but it's a wee bit large for edc (though I occasionally do).

edit: Re: #13. I have one, but it's just a novelty item for me. I have seen blackforestghost's video of him using his #13, but I don't trust the lock on mine. It's quite different from the lock on the smaller models and doesn't feel super secure to me. At least not enough so to trust it to keep the 13's large, heavy blade off my fingers. YMMV.

I originally didn't like the opinels, I liked one hand folders (Sebenza is still my favorite knife), but I started carrying a traditional...and now I am thinking more and more about picking up an opinel simply because I can...and the desing is starting to grow on me (I think some of Jackknife's stories are part of that).

I shall get one the next time I see one in a store.

Thanks. And damn, still a 4x price jump over a 12...don't think I'm willing to go that high for an Opinel, I'll stick with a 12 unless I happen to see a bargain somewhere.

Basically a novelty item... I guess the higher price reflects the lower sales of the model.

I noticed the same thing with the Douk-Douk Géant... A Douk with a 4.5-in blade sounded great until I realized it was 100 bucks.

Aye, seems likely. And yeah, I have that issue a lot, something sounds awesome...then you see the price, and suddenly it doesn't sound nearly as awesome as it just did, heh.

I carry an opinel 10 , even tho it has the collar lock to keep it closed it comes open in my pocket now and then
I was jostled in a supermarket by a couple kids once ... but my wallet was still in pocket so i didnt worry too much about it .. when i got home I put my hand in pocket to find my knife open in my pocket .. when i got it out there was a sliver of finger on the blade edge .. that V of skin from sliding down and up the exposed cutting edge ...
thing is tho .. none of my fingers were cut
Im guessing that there was a kid who was a little more careful whose pockets he picked after that tho

I have seven at the last count, they really are hard to beat usefullness-wise. My favorite thing about them is that the lock is optional. Many times for a simple cut I don't bother with it, a lifetime of slip joints has taught me how to manage an edge. Other times, usually when doing tip or heavy carving work, or when lending it out, then the lock goes on just to be prudent.

Opinels beg to be fiddled with! Here's my first attempt carving a #8. I gifted it to a buddy who really enjoys it and uses it as his lunchpail knife at work...
