A few examples from my meager collection:

I'd say the Umnumzaan has the most comfortable one, but I did greatly enjoy the exquisite torture the Inkosi thumbstuds bestowed upon me during initial break-in phase.
Kind of sad that my thumb is now a giant callous.

Curious to hear what some of you with larger collections would say regarding this.

And no, flipper tabs and Spyderco holes don't count!

The thumbstuds on Benchmade 's vicar (757) model are great! Pretty sure they're the same as the ones that were on the other Sibert models. The double action autos from like 2013!! I guess they're maker/ model specific!

Good thumbstuds (good ergo, easy to remove and change) = CS American Lawman, Spartan Akribis, Demko AD-15, Hogue Ritter.
Bad thumbstuds (bad ergo, press fitted and difficult to change) = Sebenza.

Some of my favorite thumbstuds would have to be the ones on my Al Mar SERE 2000. I also like the one on my Dozier Custom, but that one probably wouldn't be for everyone. It's VERY aggressively textured.

the ones on Al Mar sere2k are excellent, but after having the ones on the vicar they dropped a notch for me.. Still love the 2k but !! Just ordered some python micarta to put on the vicar!! We shall see how that.goes!! It's a crapshoot what pattern you wind up with might end up returning them!!!

Lol :D Spydie holes and push button autos
I like the Kershaw Blur thumb-studs
I actually like CRK thumb-studs too

These all work really well:

The best production ones I've encountered so far are on the Pro-Tech TR-3 Integrity:

I've only experienced those on Benchmades which work fine for me.

I like the jewelled thumb studs on the William Henry knives (topaz, sapphire, and spessartite shown here). The thumb studs match the lock buttons. If a knife is properly tuned, you can depress the lock button and flip it open and shut. No need for a thumb stud.View attachment 1339826

I like those on the Sebenza. Once you get the hang of them, they work great and don't catch on your pocket.

I really do like BM's thumbstuds, Grip, 940, etc, tuned in with the right pivot tightness, it's a joy to use.

I like CRK thumbstuds too, but it does need some getting used to. Their knives have great detent and very secure thumbstud design, definitely reliable to use.

I like Benchmades thumbstuds and Cold Steel. I also like a Spyderhole, but dont like the giant weak spot in the blade that it creates (especially on their thin blades).
That’s why I handle my Spydies with more care than my Cold Steels. I don’t baby them by any means, but I certainly don’t throw them to the mud. Spydies are like sports cars. They get you from Point A to Point B just fine but they’re just not for offroad applications. Cold Steels are the big bad trucks of the knife world. :D
