Favorite thumbstuds?

Speaking of cold steel: I loved the thumb thingy on the cold steel talwar I owned years ago (ended up foolishly being confiscated, and the loss haunts me to this day)

Nice way to add the wave feature, without making the blade ugly, as on Emerson knives (at least in my opinion)

Cold steel needs to do custom classics again. Not interested in most of the stuff going on with them now

No favorites, placement is more important to me. Too close to pivot and it's hard to open; too far down the blade and it's hard to reach/use. Type, I don't care: rough, I file it smoother; slick, I file it rougher. No biggie. I do not like holes in my blades. Why does Spyderco put holes in their fixed blades?? IMHO, just weakens the blade. Silly. I carry a SAK Tinker in one pocket and a ball bearing
flipper in the other. If out in the woods; Tinker and 4" puukko.

^ I never really gave thumb studs a lot of thought (maybe because I prefer flippers?)....that is, until I read your OP. I took a few of my knives out today, & began opening them; seeing which ones opened more smoothly & more ergonomically.
Out of most of my production folder's, I would have to give the edge to my old school, Microtech Socom, followed by my CRK Large Sebenza 21's, then the CRK Zaan, & finally the Strider SnG. I really like the fact, that CRK, gives you the option of single sided thumb stud, or a dual sided.

That's a really cool looking knife!:thumbsup: And I have to agree- I've never been much of a fan of the waved feature either. If you don't mind me asking & bringing up a potentially sore subject- what happened, causing your CS Talwar to be confiscated?

I got pulled over for speeding. Cop searched me, snatched it up, and gave me a ticket for speeding.
He didn't charge me for the knife, so I assume he kept it. Must be a knife guy too

CRK Sebenza & Inkosi are by far my favorite. Nobody has nailed the art of a functional minimalist jewel of a thumb stud like Chris Reeve Knives. Second would be the Strider oval hole followed by no stud like a Shiro Flipper.

I knew a cop on another forum who openly bragged about stealing a new Sebenza from a kid he shook down in a sidewalk Stop and Frisk.

I vote no thumb studs. I haven’t found one that’s comfortable. I prefer flippers.

Sebenza 21. Nice location, plenty of space, not hard on the thumb. For something so simple it was executed damn near perfectly. And combine that with silky soothing opening. #Perfection

you should have gotten a receipt for your knife along with officer's badge and ID number. Police shouldn't be just taking/stealing folks knives.

Nah I was screwed either way. The knife was illegal to carry.

Challenging him could've proven a bad move.
He could've arrested me. I'd be stuck in a holding cell for a couple hours until getting out. Then I'd have to pay a few hundred to get my car our of storage after being towed.

Then Id go to court(after missing a day of work), and then I Would've has to pay a fine on top of that.

Better to take the L and move on

As of today, the thumbstud on the Hogue Mini-RSK MK1-G2 is my new favorite. It's perfectly placed so that the blade flies open with ease and it has a great texture. I imagine the thumb stud on the full-sized Hogue would be just as good.

Love the CRK thumbstuds. I cannot for the life of me understand all the guys having a hard time with it.

It's VERY simple, you don't put your thumb ON IT but BEHIND IT when you open the knife.

For me, the Benchmade Super Freek thumb studs are better than any/all others I've found. Unfortunately, it took more than a few bucks and way more than 60 knives to find the one with "perfect" thumb studs.

Another vote for Crk studs. I’ve never experienced the dreaded “sebenza thumb”. They work just fine for me. 353 353 made a very good statement

I like how Southern Grind did some vertical milling on the round thumbstud of my Spider Monkey. Adds a bit of traction for the thumb and also some visual appeal matching the pivot screw. Nice little touch.
