Favorite Traditional Folder?

Hi John -

My favorite traditional folder is my late step-fathers small Case pocket-worn bone penknife. I bought this for him and he carried it every day for several years before his death.

It is a great little knife, and I carry it on his birthday every year, and pull it out once in a while when thinking about Harold. I think I'll take it to the hockey game with me tonight.

I`m going to start by rotating through 3 of my China made Bucks (I can`t bear to use the Imperials or Schrade, with my luck I would lose them). I`ll try a 3 1/2" closed Trapper, a 4 1/8" closed Trapper, and a 3 1/4" closed Stockman with fake jigged bone handles, and see size which I prefer. Maybe later on I can upgrade. I know the hardware store in Wilmington carries a nice Case display, where I can inspect the knife before getting it. I`ve heard too many horror stories about current Case production to get one without checking it out first.

Here are the 3 contenders.

sounds good, I'm getting more and more "into" traditionals, the case sowbelly has been calling me lately as well, like myke my ebay watch list is way to big :p

I've found a small belt pouch sheath removes the losing/accessibility (digging through pockets for a knife) issue I had

It seems like the older I get, the more I like the older style knives. I figure when I turn 60 next year I`ll probably be carrying a knife made of stone!

I find myself doing the same thing. I have seen some really nice flint knives lately...

Here are two of my favorites in that price range. A Case Mini Copperhead and a Case Medium Texas Jack. That little copperhead disappears in your pocket. I always have it on me.

I second the GEC Bullnose for a larger knife. I really like it. Only pocketknife I own in O1 steel.

If anyone has any more pics of their favorites, I`d sure like to see them! Closed measurements would be helpfull.

I'll be honest. Since joining the forums, i have tried to like the traditional folders. and, i do like them. i like the looks of them, and i like what they represent. i did buy a few. however, i can't get any of them to get me to take the SAK out of my pocket.

i do like that case hunter. that has potential...especially in the configuration that Myke showed. i agree...just a blade and a saw would be perfect.

cool thread. i will keep checking it. i do like to see all the pics.

I agree with you, I always have a SAK in my pocket, just looking for another to carry.

two knives, that's madness! speaking of which - my red sak farmer turned up today, when my wife shifted the car seat into her driving position I was putting the baby on her car seat and lo and behold there it was on the runner...makes me kind of suspicious for who it got lost though ummm :p

good day so far though :)

anyway, here you go john, doesn't quite fit the criteria but I don't have many traditional...yet :)

I`m liking the holster and cap gun! Looks like you collect odd stuff, just like me.

I think it's a 1990's zippo, I don't actually collect them (shocking, right?) but a google search produced the rough date, it is scrimshaw, I like it, it has a small story beyond it in that I used to work at one of those old hotels (little run down but a feeling of history to it - big marble floored hall on entry, solid wood clerk desk etc etc) anyway they ended up closing it down and I was helping clean out the old office - not used as an office for years. Also it needs a new inside cotton thing because this ones about worn out.

I don't have ay more pictures of it but I'll try to including it next time I'm snapping for ya.

I try not to, it doesn't seem to work :) That's a Roy Rogers kid holster (and one of the matching guns) we found cleaning out my mother in laws storage unit, she didn't know where it came from.

here's the same soduster with two other collectable cap guns we found, can't remember the names right now,

I'm not a folder collector, but have been leaning towards/wanting a large tooth pic & sodbuster.I've got a bunch on my watch list on ebay.
My favorite pattern is the trapper though, would love a hunter without the gut hook blade.

Not a Case,probably made in china,but damn,it has a lock,tweezers,pick,saw & no gut hook.

Nope, not a Case. It's a Schrade Old Timer. Buzzsaw Trapper - Model 970T. I don't know where they are currently made, but this one was made in the good ol' USA.

And a similar Schrade Old Timer. Bearhead Trapper - Model 960T. This one was also made in the USA.

The stuff on the blades is my fingerprints, from opening them up, and the preservative to keep them shiny and new.
