I was wondering what all of your favorite UBTOTD's are?

To expand on the topic for those who are not preditorial kuk collectors, like some individuals in this forum, either the UBDOTD you have or one you would like to have.

I would also like to hear what modifications ya'll have made to your UBTOTD.

Just trying to stir up a small frenzy. I know that the letters UBDOTD make my mouth water :).
 
This silver mounted Gelbu Special by Bura was (up until that point of time) said by Uncle Bill to be the prettiest "blem" ever offered. I still don't know what the blem is. This is one beautiful khukuri in both the blade and the wonderfully carved handle. It and my YCS are my two "desert island" khukuris.

Most of my Khuks are of UBDOTD origin. In addition to the so-called "defects", I usually sand down the edge of the buttcap, to even the fit and do away with any small edges. The carved UBE handle is the only one that had a perfect "wood to metal" fit, and the wood evidently had seasoned longer. I check each edge for a wire, and remove it with hand stones. The sheathes all get a good rubbing down with Lexol, and the brass/silver is polished.

AND THEN I OIL THE HANDLES HEHEHehehe. I've posted about the Saatisal on my Malla. This has become one of the strangest and most beautiful pieces of wood I've ever finshed. I capped it off with a carnuba wax at something over 40 coats of oil. If you hold it to the light, and turn it, grain lines 1/4" wide, and the length of the handle either change from black to gold, or disappear entirely, and return as the rotation continues. A moving light show.

Well I guess it isn't really. I just thought right after I wrote that that my Dui Chiarra Chainpuri or "Chitlangi" is my favorite UBDOTD!!!!:D
I must have had a major relapse there for a moment, not to have thought about that one right off!!!!
And not only is it my favorite UBDOTD the "Chitlangi" is also one of my favorite khukuri's.
It's the one I strapped on when we went down by the crick the other day. Lots of bear have been seen up around there and I know for a fact that everyone is faster then me although everyone might be surprised, even me, if I did come face to face with a bear in the wild. I might just leave tread marks on the bear's head!!!!:D

Favorite UBDOTD? The next one I grab before everyone else.

Everybody just keep reading and responding to this thread. Don't bother reloading, or periodically checking other posts.

I promise I'll let everyone know all about it after Uncle confirms I got MY response in first and it's on it's way. OK?

That's easy. My favorite UBDOTD is my 3 1/4 Lb. Ganga Ram Special. My choice is simplified by the fact that the GRS is my only UBDOTD! :p :D :D

The only things done to it so far is the patent pending Walosi Gunstock Fininsh on the handle ( only five coats so far-- still in progress ! ;) ) and the lexol/ neutral wax treatment for the scabbard. Incidently had to freeze my scabbard for a week and a half to kill our little Nepalese sawdust bugs. No worse for wear.

As far as UBDOTD's I'd like to see:

1. A unembellished YCS like Blues had made.

2. A carved wooden handle, silver mounted, 18" AK

3. A Dui chiarra chainpuri

4. A wood handled BAS

5. A Garud AK with ebony or perhaps another experimental type wood.

Yeah, I know, but if you're going to dream, DREAM BIG! :D

I noticed that Yangdu had tossed a Hanuman into the blem box. I've got to check it out to see what's wrong with it -- my guess is scabbard damage -- and get up a pix. That's make a nice UBDOTD.

Beautiful blade, Blues. Carved wood handle. I may have to get one of those...HEHEHE..Choke:p
 
I have had to think long and hard about this one myself.
I only own a few kuks all but 2 are blems, but they all have their place.

I figure my favorite UBDOTD is my 18"AK. It came with a chipped handle via. customs and a really tight scabbard. Which due to time constraints I am still working on.

A beautiful and perfect blade by Sanu. It calls me at the wee hours of the morning to go and pay it some attention. It is also my sharpest Kuk so far. I have done a little bit of work with it and it is still has its out of the box scary sharp edge.

Personally I would like to see some of those Kumar Kardas, engraved blade and handle. Carved wooden scabard, sort of like a carved tanto. I don't know if it has been done, but I am sure the Kamis can do a good job of it. The thing that would make it a UBDOTD is the itty bitty chip/scratch in the silver furniture. ( I agree, Dream BIG)

Uncle, how much would something like the above rig set me back? I have myself thinking about a show piece now. Something to gawk at, not that I already don't do that, but you know. :D
 
I just realised that the Kumar Karda is 1/8" thick, probably too small to engrave. I'd take one around 1/4" to 3/8" thick to fix this. I have never measured my Kardas, I think I will do that when I get home from work.

can't break it down any further than a tie between my Bura banspati, Sanu YCS, and Durba UBE. And come to think of it, seems to me that maybe some of those anonymous but much-used villagers were UBDOTDs, too.
 
...but Yvsa was able to make use of the little known Cherokee escape clause by keeping his fingers crossed behind his back. ;)

Oh, and Yvsa, don't bother sending it, I wouldn't want to examine it and go through the heartbreak of sending it back. :D

Don't tell me we have a passing of the pipe in the making!

Dave, if you want the knife we'll try to make it for you but wait until after the convention. You may see something there you like better.
