Favorite UNDERDOG production knife?

I'll second the Browning. I use a Barracuda as a beater, It's a good knife. Not just the folders are good but over the years they have produced some pretty good fixed blades.
Their custom series knives are awesome.

Moki Zephyr (large) and Elite (small). AUS8 steel, deep hollow grind drop point, removable pocket clip, reversible thumb stud, honeycombed textured lightweight rounded profile handle. Light , functional and inexpensive! Last advertised by the now defunct Ironstone mail order for $25 and $20 respectively, shipping included!

I'll second St. James. The Outdoor edge Magna is a great design hampered by crummy blade steel. Let's see some in BG-42,D-2, or even ATS-34

1) Second on the Opinel- Lots of knife for the money
2) Swedish Mora fixed blades- @#$%*& good knife- and cheap to boot.

I'll agree on the Opinels and the Gerber L.S.T. - but add Victorinox SAK's to the list - there is a tough and inexpensive knife that's hard to beat plus being very handy and "innocent" looking. Wasn't that what "Mcgyver" always had on him to save the day?
other brands to add to that list would have to be Case and Schrade.. they both are fairly under rated for quality and ability - Good knives..maybe not "state of the Art" but very reliable traditional cutters.

I'm another satisfied owner of the Impulse and Magna but I don't see why the steel in these knives is getting a bad rap. I've used them to cut everything and they hold up great. For what I paid for them I think the steel is well above average. With an occasional touch up on my Spyderco Triangle I always keep them shaving sharp.

I would like to add Vero Beach Machine's little M-UDT auto.
Microtech quality, 440C (almost rustproof) blade, easy to locate parts (spring is same as MT), attractive, durable, convenient "pocket" size, and reasonably (cheaply) priced at $100.
I love this knife and seem to have it with me all the time.

My list includes:
Kershaw Liner Action (drop point). This is a very good knife...I have the large and medium versions, and the medium especially is very good as an in-the-pocket carry knife...very solid, takes a bit of practice to open, but when you get he hang of it, it flicks open like an auto.

Buck 700 and 300 series traditional pocket knives. Excellent workhorses, very solid, and consistent quality in general.

CRKT Mirage and KISS Classic (clip point). My Mirage has one of the best lockups on a linerlock I've got.

Although I own only one SOG knife, a lot of their models look very cool, both folder and fixed.

As far as fixed blades, I would have to say Ontario and Junglee. I've never handled an Ontario folder and only have one Junglee folder, never carried it but it seems like a well made knife. Many here do not like Junglee because of their tendency to borrow other companies' designs but their fixed blade knives are awesome. I have quite a handful.
As far as folders, I have to agree with the impulse. Great knife especially for the $$$$.

I just got a Gigand Guardian neck knive. Damn good knife for the money. Worth every penny, and then some. I've never owned any Gigands, but I hope that's going to change soon. They haven't been mentioned much around here, I've notice. I'm really impressed by the cryo treatment on the blades.

Though I don't really think REKAT is an "underdog" company, I can't help continually being impressed by the Pioneer II tanto point. It really is a great tactical folder. The Rolling Lock is strong, the workmanship has really improved over the previous model, and the blade geometry is pretty good.

Kershaw makes wonderful (underdog) knives, and have for years. Ken Onion's folders have put Kershaw in the limelight more than in the past. Anyone who has ever held one of the Wild Turkey knives has held quality.
