Favorite war movies?

My all time favorite...The Wind and the Lion

That' s an incredible movie, and very interesting choice for Razulu. I watched it with my father,it was on TV I think on Saturday.

who else other than Sean Connery could have said

"This is the Rif. I am Mulay Ahmed Muhamed Raisuli the Magnificent, sherif of the Riffian Berbers. I am the true defender of the faithful and the blood of the prophet runs in me and I am but a servant of his will."

and

"To Theodore Roosevelt - you are like the Wind and I like the Lion. You form the Tempest. The sand stings my eyes and the Ground is parched. I roar in defiance but you do not hear. But between us there is a difference. I, like the lion, must remain in my place. While you like the wind will never know yours. - Mulay Hamid El Raisuli, Lord of the Riff, Sultan to the Berbers, Last of the Barbary Pirates."

and of course Theodore Roosevelt's comment...

Theodore Roosevelt: What do I want? I want respect! Respect for human life and respect for American property! And I'm going to send the Atlantic Squadron to Morocco to get that respect.
John Hay: That's illegal.
Theodore Roosevelt: Why spoil the beauty of the thing with legality?

I would add another classic Connery movie many have not seen is The Man Who would be King.

I am more of a fan of modern and ancient war movies than WW2 and Vietnam. but some of those will make the list

300
Troy
Saving Private Ryan
Black Hawk Down
Von Ryans Express( i think that is the name, it is about a group of American Prisoners in WW2 who overpower the trains gaurds and use the train to escape)
Band of Brothers
Midway
Kingdom of Heaven (Orlando bloom is not a sissy in this movie, now that is shocking)
Over there was not exactly a movie it was just a miniseries on FX but i think it captured the war in Iraq well.

American soldiers was not a good movie but it did have a decent knife combat scene in it

Saving Private Ryan
We Were Soldiers
Black Hawk Down
Tae Guk Gi (excellent movie about the Korean War)
Ten To Chi To ("Heaven & Earth" and a movie set in feudal Japan)
Braveheart
The Patriot
Letters from Iwo Jima
The Great Escape
Glory

And don't laugh, but I loved Starship Troopers.

Buncha good ones mentioned here. Good job.

Still, no one mentioned The Battle Of The Bulge (1965) or The Wild Geese (1978) (Especially fun if you dig FN-FALs!)

Sands of Iwo Jima
Heartbreak Ridge
Rules of Engagement
Full Metal Jacket
Seige of Fire Base Gloria
Sgt York
Windtalkers
The Deer Hunter
The Boys in Company "C"
To Hell and Back (Audi Murphy story)

for me it has to be Dunkirk (1958). Starring Richard Attenborough, John Mills and Bernard Lee.

No votes for Sahara (1943)? Humphrey Bogart and a small band of Brit soldiers guarding a dried up well against a regiment of thirsty Afrika Corps? The only movie I know that has a fully working M3 Lee tank? Or the remake with a not very funny Jim Belushi?

Good call!

Already mentioned:
Gettysburg
The Patriot
Midway ( I saw it with my Dad in the Theater to and thought it was great)
Band of Brothers
To Hell and Back
Battle of the Bulge

Not mentioned (or I missed it)
The Enemy Below
Cast a Giant Shadow (About the formation of Israel)
Twelve O'clock High
Pork Chop Hill

I am leaving out a lot but those are all good.

Strangelove is one of my favorite movies, but classifying it as a "war" movie might be a bit of a stretch... Sure, it's about war, but is about as darkly-comedic an anti-war film as might be imagined.

I agree on Tora! Tora! Tora!, a wonderful recreation of the events; almost a documentary.

Another I just recalled; (being an old air warfare fan and WWII flight sim addict) The Battle Of Britain. Well done. "What do you need to defeat the RAF?" demands Goering.
"Spitfires!" says Hartmann. (I think it was Hartmann, anyway)

I thought it was Galland

That haven't been mentioned:
Kelly's Heroes
The Great Escape
Lawrence of Arabia
The Bridge on the River Kwai
The Blue Max
The African Queen
Stalag 17
Where Eagles Dare
The Desert Rats
The Bridge at Remagen
The Sand Pebbles
The Green Berets
Battle Cry
MASH

That have:
The Longest Day
Full Metal Jacket
Patton
BlackHawk Down

Ditto

A few more that haven't been brought up:

Bravo Two Zero

Exodus: Also about the birth of modern Israel (Sal Mineo, Paul Newman, Eva Marie-Saint)

Gallipoli

A Bridge Too Far

And a couple of different takes on WWII casualities:

Sophie’s Choice One of the most depressing movies ever. Streep won an oscar for her portrayal of a Nazi concentration camp survivor.

Pan’s Labyrinth A far better escapist take on the reality of WWII (Fascist Spain) than that Life Is Beautiful crap fest.

I haven't seen that for years but It has left a good impression. Ice Cold In Alex is another good desert war film. I've seen others too but can't remember titles.

Rommel, starring James Mason - I don't think I've seen that mentioned.
