The wave function is fun to play with -- or show off with -- but in terms of meaningful function it's not very good. Your hand ends up moving ups and backwards pretty fast, and that's not what you'd usually be looking for in an emergency.
The idea that in an emergency you have to snag your knife on part of your clothing while pulling the knife up and backwards is fraught with peril.
Unless you use the wave function every time you use your EDC, you're probably going to screw up the draw when it most matters. And if you do wave it every time you use your EDC, you're going to go through a lot of pockets.
Like anything else, it takes a little practice to be proficient, however, it is worth it with the wave. Practice goes a long way and faster than anything I have used (with a blade in my pocket)
Kinda like having a gun and saying it hits all around the target. That also takes some practice, to be accurate, then fast. The speed will come automatic, accuracy is most important, and so it is with a blade.
Practice is to train your mind and body, so when the time comes, you do not think about it, you react to it. You use muscle memory, it just happens, training takes over. If you have to take time to think, a lot of times it is already too late. But let's say you do "miss" the wave. You still have the thumb stud to open the knife, just like other knives. The difference is, with a wave, you have the option for a faster draw. "If" it misses, thumb studs are for back-up.
The pants- you can have your pants "modded" or reinforced by a sewing shop that specializes in that sort of thing and again, you do not "have to" use the wave to open it, but it sure is comforting to know you have the option to an almost guaranteed faster draw if the other guy is also using a folder and with practice, most likely faster than if he has a fixed blade (most are secured in the sheath, not all, but a lot are and every little edge you have (no pun) is to your advantage)
For practice, use an old pair of your pants. For carry and defense, just like a gun, you only pull it when you need it, so the pocket wear becomes a moot point. If wearing dress pants, etc and you need to cut something, use the thumb studs.
Obviously, the wave is not for everyone, but for those of us that like it and practice with it, it is a good "option".
Just another "opinion" on the same subject
